Denzel Washington Joining Black Panther 3? My Thoughts!
The Hollywood legend himself, Denzel Washington might have just spilled the beans on what popular movie franchise he might be joining in the future. Is this true? Should we trust him? Let’s get started!
The News: Denzel Washington has been on the full press tour for Gladiator II that hits theaters next week. A few days back he did an interview, where he was asked what the next movies lined up in his career after Gladiator II. He listed off some Shakespeare that he wants to do and some directors he’s planning on working with. And in the middle of casually mentioned that Ryan Coogler is writing a role for him in the next Black Panther. That’s all he says about it, the journalist doesn’t follow up on it. He just very casually mentions it in this interview and the internet was talking about and deciding if it was true or not. And I wanted to share my thoughts on it and figure out if this is something to be excited about or if Denzel is spreading fake news.
My Thoughts
- When I first heard this, I did some fact checking. It’s something that’s so out there that you have to check to see if it’s true. I’ve watched the clip in which he’s said this and he does say that Ryan Coogler is writing a part for him in the Black Panther 3. There’s a lot to unpack here whether or not this is true and I do have multiple thoughts on this.
- First up, I do think there is some truth to this. Because this is such a specific director and movie that if he says it, I would tend to say that it’s true. He could also be lying, he could pull a fast one on us. But the fact that he revealed both the filmmaker and the movie makes me think that he’s had some sort of conversations with Marvel and Ryan Coogler about a role in Black Panther 3. Once again, this could turn out to be false and Kevin Feige confirms that’s not happening and we stop thinking about it. Given how strict Marvel is with what’s revealed, this seems like the type of information that he wasn’t supposed to say, but who knows maybe he got the ok from Feige to say it
- Second, if this is true this makes me more excited for Black Panther 3. If Denzel is interested in whatever Ryan Coogler is cooking from him then I’m interested. This is a true Hollywood legend, he’s a two time Oscar winning actor who’s been in Hollywood for almost 40 years now. He’s one of those actors that’s been this A-lister without having done a big franchise film. His rise to prominence was with films like Glory and Philadelphia, not these franchise films like other actors. He’s never done a comic book movie before and if 70 year old Denzel Washington wants to join the MCU in Black Panther 3 then I’m all in. Obviously, we don’t know the character he’s playing or what the film is about. Assuming this is a one and done character, that does seem like weird casting. At the same time, in the interview he said that he only has like five or six movies inside for him before he retires. And also says, I want to work with the best and if he thinks that Ryan Coogler is one of those and he thinks Black Panther 3 is worthy of being one of his final films then I’m on board.
- Another thing to talk about here, there is some deeper meaning to Denzel joining the Black Panther franchise. If you don’t know, Denzel Washington knew Chadwick Boseman for a long time. Several years back, Washington received a lifetime achievement award and Chadwick spoke about him. He revealed that Denzel paid for Chadwick to go to acting school and become an actor. In his speech, Chadwick said “there is no Black Panther without Denzel”. If this is true, if Denzel is actually in Black Panther 3, there’s some weight behind that. Maybe that’s part of the role that drew Denzel to the project. It’s a role that honors Chadwick’s legacy, if that’s the case then this could be something very cool.
Final Thoughts: With all of this information out there and my thoughts, I wouldn’t rule this out as being true. I would bet money that Denzel is telling the truth in some way. With what we know about Denzel and Chadwick’s relationship, this could be true and the role could be something very cool.
