Is Avengers: Secret Wars Keeping the December 2027 Release Date?
Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars are the next MCU films hitting theaters and they are set to be some of the biggest films of 2026 and 2027. Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18th, 2026, while Secret Wars is scheduled for December 17th, 2027. Now that Secret Wars release date is a little bit questionable at the moment because of when filming is supposed to start. Does it keep the December 2027 release date? Let’s talk about it!
The Rumor: To be perfectly clear, this is just a rumor. The rumor comes from Daniel RPK who is an independent film journalist. He’s scoped hundreds and hundreds of stories in the past. He’s been right a number of times and he’s been wrong a number of times. But if he says something like this, I like to pay attention. And he said earlier this week that Avengers: Secret Wars might not start filming until February 2027. There’s nothing else said about that and whether or not the film will keep its December 2027 release date.
My Thoughts
Like I said, the filming date is just a rumor. As of right now, it doesn’t mean anything but it does raise an interesting talking piece. Let’s assume that Secret Wars doesn’t start filming until February 2027, will it keep its December 2027 release date? If I’m being honest, I don’t think it will keep that release date if filming doesn’t start until 2027. As a point of reference, filming was supposed to start in August or September of this year, and obviously that hasn’t happened yet. Even that filming star seemed a little bit late for a movie of this size but it was doable. They still could’ve kept that December 2027 release date.
But starting to film in February 2027 with a movie releasing in December 2027 seems so unlikely, especially when it’s a film of this size. This shoot will take five to six months to film, which means filming won’t be done until July or August of 2027. That gives them five to six months of post-production and reshoots and when Secret Wars is likely going to be the biggest film of 2027, I don’t know if that’s enough time for them to finish this movie. Apparently, they filmed a little bit of Secret Wars when they were shooting Doomsday. How much of Secret Wars? I don’t know. But if it’s about a month of shooting, that’s one less month they have to film for Secret Wars. Which gives them one extra month in post-production, and one month is always good when post-production especially for this size of a movie.
Honestly, assuming the February 2027 filming date is true, I think they should push back Secret Wars. If they do decide to push it back then they should do it before Doomsday comes out in December. If they delay the film after Doomsday comes out, then that makes Secret Wars look bad and the film might be in trouble. If you push Secret Wars back to May 2028, that gives them more time to get this movie made and make sure it's the best possible movie they can make. I know Marvel already has films scheduled for 2028, but they can push those movies back to the next scheduled release date. Some people might argue against the idea of pushing Secret Wars back since Doomsday is going to end on a cliffhanger. I can get that point and argument, but if Doomsday’s ending is awesome people will be willing to wait an extra six months to see Secret Wars. Had they delayed Endgame six months, and it was a year and a half after Infinity War people still would’ve been just as excited for Endgame.
We’ll see what happens with filming for Secret Wars. 2026 only has a few months left and if it doesn’t start filming before the end of 2026 I think it should and it will get pushed back. But if they want to push it back, they should do that sooner rather than later because it’ll be a smart idea to make sure Secret Wars is awesome.
