Clayface: First Reactions are FANTASTIC!
One of my most anticipated movies of the fall is Clayface, I love Batman and I loved that with this movie they were doing something different with the genre. I was very curious to see what the early reactions to the movie were and now we have them and they are fantastic!
The Reviews
- “Clayface was fantastic. An awesome addition to the DCU that doesn’t require any knowledge of DC to enjoy. It’s a hard R and loaded with brutal scenes that really surprised me. The audience freaked out a few times during my screening to what was being dept Ed on screen. Strong recommendation.” - Steve Weintraub (CollideR)
- “Clayface is freakishly awesome. James Watkins makes an unsettling Gotham and gets very dark with Clayface’s abilities. Gruesome, dark moments, and twisted ideas at play. Thomas Rhys Harries is a star, literally in the movie and for his performance. Dude kills it. Well done by all.” - Brandon Davis
- “Clayface is everything you want from a villain led movie. No more anti-hero bullshit. DC understands that tragic villains can exist. I was harsh with Lanterns and Supergirl, so I went into this movie excited, but nervous. The movie reminds you why Batman villains are different.” - Conor
- “Clayface is incredible! It molds Matt Hagen’s tragic backstory into a wildly gory spectacle. There are some crazy unique body horror moments that’ll make you squirm, but what I love most is it’s also a heartfelt throwback to a bygone era of classic gothic romance films. This movie does such a fantastic job introducing us to Clayface, it’ll be an absolute shame if we don’t see him go toe-to-toe with Batman in the future…Just go see Clayface because it’s an unsettling and viscerally grotesque monster movie.” - Chris Killian
- “Clayface is the proof of concept of DC Studios: A movie that works on its own first, all shared universe considerations secondary. That it’s also a well-written, beautifully acted body horror/mad science/antihero monster movie à la The Fly and Darkman is the bloody cherry on top.” - Bill Bria
My Thoughts: First things first, I love that the early reactions to Clayface are fantastic. This is one that I was originally skeptical about when it was first announced because we were getting a Clayface movie before Batman. I was not sure how that was going to work and then the trailers started to come in and they were great. For months now, this has only been a movie that I have been excited about. It looks incredible and it looks like an interesting and different comic book movie. I might be wrong, but this feels like the first time we are getting a proper horror movie in the genre, that right there it is just inherently interesting. The reviews themselves have been fantastic. I was struggling to find one that was saying anything negative about the movie. I love that they are specifically commenting on the body gore in the film and how the body gore is nasty and gross. It sounds like Thomas Rhys Harries is going to be a breakout star of 2026 which could be interesting because it looks like several of the breakout stars of 2026 will come from horror. Overall, I am just excited to check this movie out next week and I hope it is as good or even better then what the
reviews are saying.
