Avengers: Doomsday Filmed Without a Finished Script! Should We Be Concerned?
It is safe to say that Avengers: Doomsday is one of the most anticipated movies of 2026 and could very well be the biggest movie of 2026. But recently The Russo Brothers have made some comments about the filming progress on Avengers: Doomsday that has a lot of people concerned and worried. Here are my thoughts!
My Thoughts
So, The Russo Brothers recently did an interview with the Associated Press and they talked about Doomsday, and the filming process. Their response to the question was this, “We always view the script as a living organism. We are improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you do not get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that is when the magic happens.”
The quotes went viral and they got a lot of people talking and expressing their concerns about the film. Rightfully so, at face value hearing that a big budget movie like Doomsday filming without a finished script does not at once sound like a great idea. But if you look at the quote, they were more so talking about how they improvised and they did not stick 100% to the script and changed things. But they still had an outline and a story for the movie, but the individual scenes changed. This is how The Russo Brothers have filmed their MCU movies, specifically Infinity War and Endgame. Considerable portions of Endgame’s final battle were changed. There are deleted scenes out there of how characters reunite in different contexts then what we see in the film. I would not be surprised if after Doomsday, we get deleted scenes or alternative takes and see how they are different from the scenes we get in the actual movie. In this quote, The Russo Brothers even say that the actors know these characters more than they do and more than the writers do. It is smart to give the actors room to play around whether that is with improv or with giving more depth to emotional scenes. The reason I do not worry about this is because that is how The Russo Brothers work in the MCU. They like to have a very fluid script and not stick 100% to the script every day with every scene. The Russo Brothers have the best record of accomplishment in the MCU, and what they did with Infinity War and Endgame is truly something special. So, if they want to improv with the actors and treat the script as a living organism, that is completely fine because I trust them with this franchise with these characters.
I have seen some people argue back against these statements and get concerned because past MCU movies, especially in the Multiverse Saga are infamous for having fluid scripts but that have negative consequences. The most infamous example would be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Where there’s clips out there of Elizabeth Olsen being very honest about the filming process and about how there were 33 rewrites of the script. It got to the point where she stopped reading the scripts because she knew that once she got a script she read it and then they started shooting that new script they would already have a new script. There have been a lot of stories about recent MCU projects being micromanaged or filming without a completed script. Rightfully so, people hear that is happening with Doomsday and they get concerned. On the one hand, I totally get why people draw that comparison. But for me, I view this as different things. The simple reason for that is I think now, Marvel knows, and Kevin Feige has even acknowledged that they have not been on a good streak. They know the amount of pressure that is on Doomsday to work both critically and financially. Where it fails at either one, that is not good for the future of the MCU. That is why The Russo Brothers were brought back to direct this movie. Kevin Feige knows better than anybody their track record with the MCU is legendary. What they did with Infinity War and Endgame is truly special, so they want to get it right. They know that they have disappointed the fans in the past and they don’t want to frustrate the fans again, especially with something like Doomsday that has so much hype going into it and a lot of weight riding on it.
Maybe once I see the movie, I will acknowledge that filming without a finished script was not the best and the quality of the film will reflect that. As of right now, they are still three months out. I do not view that as a concern. And I do not think other people should be concerned about it either.
