Can Spider-Man: Brand New Day Beat The Force Awakens?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate at the box office. In its second weekend, it made $145 million which makes it the third biggest second weekend in history behind Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame. With this film killing it at the box office, people are wondering how far the film will go at the box office. Here we go!
My Thoughts
The specific milestone I want to talk about is whether Brand New Day can beat The Force Awakens at the domestic box office. If you do not know, for 11 years now The Force Awakens has held the title for the highest grossing movie at the domestic box office, with $936 million. It is the only film in history to make over $900 million at the domestic box office. As a quick point of reference, the second biggest movie at the domestic box office is Endgame with $858 million. Currently, after 10 days in release Brand New Day has made $655 million at the domestic box office. After The Force Awakens’ first 10 days at the box office made $540 million. As of right now, Brand New Day is tracking about $115 million ahead of The Force Awakens.
To answer the question of this blog post, it is extremely likely that Brand New Day will surpass The Force Awakens at the domestic box office. By how much? I have no idea. But there is no competition that is going to stop Spider-Man at the box office for a while. We are getting The End of Oak Street this weekend, which might take some of the big screens from Brand New Day, but Brand New Day is still going to be #1 at the box office for several more weeks. Which means that it is going to continue to kill it at the box office. Some reports and box office websites are saying that this film will be the first to cross $1 billion at the domestic box office. That part seems like a stretch to me. That means it will have to make an added $64 million past The Force Awakens to reach that milestone. Which is not off the table, Brand New Day’s box office has been so hard to predict that I feel like anything I say will be proven false in a matter of time.
Part of the reason for that, is that school is back in session. I live in Reno, Nevada and this week is when kids are going back to school in Reno. Which means that the daily box office for Monday and Thursday are going to go down. The weekends are still going to be strong, but the weekdays are not going to be as strong. They are still going to do solid numbers, and I am sure the evenings will fill up, but the daily box office is not going to be as strong because kids are back in school. I think because of that, it is really going to slow down and hurt Spider-Man’s box office a little bit, key word being just a little bit. This movie is still going to be fine, but I do not think the box office momentum is going to be high enough to make an added $64 million past what The Force Awakens is to reach $1 billion at the domestic box office. The movie is going to clear $900 million at the domestic box office, easily, I am more skeptical about $1 billion at the box office.
Anyway, you spin this, what Spider-Man: Brand New Day is doing at the box office and will continue to do at the box office is incredible. I expected this movie to do very well and easily make $1 billion. But the fact that Brand New Day is tracking to end its box office run between $2.5-$2.7 billion is insane to me. Even if this only makes $900 million at the domestic box office, it is still an absolute win.
