Can Avengers: Endgame Beat Avatar At the Box Office? $3 Billion Film?

Can Avengers: Endgame beat Avatar at the Box Office? $3 Billion Film?

In case you missed it, Avengers: Endgame is heading back to theaters in September but this time it’s titled as Avengers: Endgame: Encore and the people who see it will see footage that connects to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. As of right now, Endgame is only $124 million away from surpassing Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time. The question then becomes, can Avengers: Endgame surpass Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time and even surpass $3 billion?

How Big Will Avengers: Endgame’s Re-Release Be?

Simply put, I think Avengers: Endgame’s re-release is going to be massive. Where it is coming out at the right time, in between Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has continued to grow at the box office, and it is doing fantastic numbers. There is growing excitement for Avengers: Doomsday, so dropping Endgame’s re-release in the middle of this I think is a brilliant move. I do not know how much of the release was planned and how much of it was just luck, but if it was planned then it is brilliant.

As previously mentioned, the film is about $124 million behind Avatar to be the highest-grossing movie of all time. I was having some of my doubts about how well the Endgame re-release will do. John Campea on his show the other day, talked about this topic and he mentioned that he has sources in the box office space and said that based on ticket sales, it sounds like Endgame is going to surpass Avatar. It is funny that there seems to be this back and forth between Marvel and James Cameron as to what the highest grossing movie of all time. I would not be surprised if Avatar gets re-released in the next couple of years so that way it could surpass Endgame once again. John Campea has reliable sources, so if he says something like this then I am going to take enough stock into what he is saying.

What is also fun about how well Avengers: Endgame’s re-release could do, is that it is likely that it could surpass Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens at the domestic box office. Right now, it is only $78.2 million away from beating that milestone. There is a chance that Endgame’s re-release could break multiple records because it became the highest grossing movie domestically and worldwide. With that said, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also has a strong chance to surpass The Force Awakens. It already surpassed Endgame, and it is only about $70 million away from beating The Force Awakens. So, it could beat this number before Endgame’s re-release even happens. Let us assume that Brand New Day surpasses The Force Awakens, Brand New Day might only be holding that title for a few weeks. We will have to see how far past The Force Awakens, Brand New Day gets but if it is only a few million past The Force Awakens, then I think Endgame could surpass it. This is a fun time at the box office where we could potentially have three movies fighting over what is the highest grossing movie at the domestic box office. We will have to wait till the end of September and see what exactly happens, and how strong the movie is at the domestic box office. But if it has a fantastic opening weekend, and it has strong legs then it is 100% on the table. Once again, we will have to wait and see what happens.

The final thing I wanted to talk about here is assuming Endgame’s re-release is massive and it surpasses Avatar, that means it is only $76.3 million away from making $3 billion at the box office. There is another question to be asked, can it make that added $76.3 million that it needs to surpass that milestone? Once again, we will have to wait on how big the re-release’s box office is. Right now, I do not know if it does that, but it could and there is a very solid chance that it does. If Endgame can be the first $3 billion film, then that is crazy, and it is the perfect movie to deserve that milestone as it is this cinematic event closing out the Infinity Saga in such a satisfying way.
