Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Who is Sadie Sink Playing? Why I Hope It’s NOT Jean Grey!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the summer and the year. There is so much excitement and speculation going into that film wondering what Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man adventure is going to be. One of the popular things people are debating is who is Sadie Sink playing in the film. As of right now, the identity of her character has not been revealed so there are all sorts of speculation as to who the Stranger Things star could be playing. Here are my thoughts on all this speculation!
My Thoughts
Ever since Sadie Sink was cast in the film, March of last year there has been all sorts of speculation as to how she will be playing in the film. There were some set photos leaked of her costume and many people started to look at the comics to figure out who she will be playing. We have now gotten two full trailers for the movie, and the identity of her character has yet to be revealed. The big rumor/fan theory surrounding this is that she is playing Jean Grey from the X-Men. There is nothing confirmed from Sony or Marvel about this, but a lot of people are guessing that she is playing Jean Grey in this movie.
To which, if this is true and she is playing Jean Grey, I hope she is not playing Jean Grey. The reason for that is I do not want this movie to be a vehicle to tease the X-Men and the future of the MCU. Part of the problem with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man run is that there have always been more side characters propping him up and most of us want a movie where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is front and center. Homecoming we had Iron Man, Far From Home we had Nick Fury, No Way Home we had Doctor Strange, and with Brand New Day we are getting The Hulk and The Punisher. I know there’s deals cut with Marvel and Sony about the characters they must use. But with The Hulk already being in the film, who has such a dominant presence, the trailers have even hinted that we are getting a raging Hulk in this movie. So, if you add in Jean Grey to this film, it is another big iconic character that is a distraction from Spider-Man and focused more on the future of the MCU.
The MCU has always used movies to tease future characters or films, and with this movie likely to make $1 billion teasing the X-Men in this film is probably a very smart decision because it gets a lot of people excited about the film and the future. Introducing Jean Grey into the MCU has big implications and like I said earlier, I do not want this movie to feel like a setup movie. People have counter argued with this and say that the MCU has always teased characters in other films before their own films. Like Black Widow in Iron Man 2 or Spider-Man and Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. That is a true statement, but they are quite different examples from each other. Black Widow and Black Panther were not these A-list superheroes prior to being in the MCU. They were not these famous characters that everybody knew and loved prior to 2010 and 2016. Normal people did not have an opinion on Black Widow and Black Panther prior to the MCU. Spider-Man prior to the MCU was a popular superhero, he is THE MOST popular superhero of all time. Him joining the MCU was exciting for all the obvious reasons, but it did not have big implications or questions for the future of the MCU. Having Jean Grey introduced in this film has much more implications for the future of the MCU, because it teases the X-Men and lets people know that mutants are out there. Superficial, I get the comparisons that people are making. But I think if you dive into what the difference is between them; there is quite a bit, and they are not actually all that similar.
