In 529 days away, The Batman: Part II releases. The build up and excitement for the film has been very weird because of so many delays and then recently no announcement or updates at CinemaCon. What is my excitement for the film? Am I concerned about the film? Let’s talk about it!
My Thoughts
So, if you don’t know the production of The Batman: Part II thus far, basically this film has been delayed two different times. The film was originally scheduled for October 2025. That’s about six months ago when this film was originally going to come out. But for whatever reason, the film got delayed to October 2026 and then again to October 2027. What’s even more weird and frustrating during all of this is that both Matt Reeves and James Gunn kept on making comments that stated that the script should be turned in very soon. Both of them were saying stuff like “I should have the script in the next few weeks”. And it never happened, the script never got turned in during the point in time in which they mentioned it would. Starting in June 2025, there’s been positive updates about the film. Matt Reeves turned in the script to James Gunn and they’ve cast multiple actors to be prominent roles in the film.
Then the other piece of information that’s important to talk about here is the fact that CinemaCon was held last week. If you don’t know what CinemaCon is, it’s basically a movie convention that’s designed to get movie theaters excited for what’s next. All of the major studios like Warner Brothers, Disney, Paramount, etc have 2 hour long panels basically discussing everything they have coming out in the next few years. Warner Brothers had a big panel where they revealed the slate for their films in 2027 and 2028. As of right now The Batman: Part II has an October 2027 release date, and it wasn’t on there and not a single mention of it. I don’t know what that means, but that seems a bit weird and concerning to me. The fact that one of their biggest movies of the next several years didn’t get any mention at CinemaCon is very weird. I know they haven’t started shooting so they couldn’t show any footage. But at the very least, they could’ve brought the cast out and confirmed the roles that Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson are playing. They didn’t do any of that which is very weird to me.
Does This Make Me Concerned?: In general, I wouldn’t say that all of these updates and lack of announcements make me concerned, but they make me question what exactly is going on here. It’s not immediately obvious what all of the issues would be with a sequel to The Batman. Warner Brothers or DC probably weren’t too surprised that The Batman was a hit and it’s a franchise that’s easy to plan what the next film is going to be because Batman has such an extensive lore from the comic book movies. Granted, Matt Reeves is smarter than me so if he wants to take his time and not rush out a sequel that’s fine. But it’s weird that a mix of delays and untruthful updates about the film have caused a sequel to The Batman to be delayed two full years. As of right now, The Batman: Part II is my most anticipated film of next year. That could change with other trailers coming out. But I loved The Batman, it’s my favorite film so far this decade and I love Batman as a character so The Batman: Part II is a film that I can’t wait to check out.
