Mortal Kombat II Reviews Are In…Flawless Victory?

Mortal Kombat II is the latest video game adaptation to hit theaters. This is a sequel to the 2021 film. This has been an interesting one because this film was supposed to release last October but they pushed it back to the middle of May in terms of making it a summer blockbuster. Was that a smart move? Is the film a flawless victory? Let’s talk about it!

The Reviews

  • Mortal Kombat II is the best Mortal Kombat film ever made…Kitana and & Johnny Cage take center stage. Kano is hilarious. What more could you want? A not so FLAWLESS VICTORY but a victory…Dialogue and line-deliveries aren’t the best. It’s self aware in knowing what kind of film it is and plays into the campy nature.” - Sammy J Jonah Jameson
  • Mortal Kombat II is the movie we should’ve gotten the first time. It feels more confident and comfortable embracing its video game roots to huge benefit. It’s a fun, fast-paced, ridiculous bloodbath with great action. Kitana is the heart of it. Kano is hilarious. It’s like a Deadpool movie had a baby with Final Destination.” - Brandon Davis
  • “I saw Mortal Kombat II last night. It’s essentially a 2-hour apology for the 2021 movie. Barely any plot. Fight scenes designed to look like 2D video game battles. Cutscene-level dialogue. Marvel-style quips. Exploding heads. Look, it’s a fun movie but a paper thin on at best.” - Jake
  • Mortal Kombat II pulls its punches when it matters most, but seeing these characters on screen is a total blast. It’s pure arcade energy and features a Liu Kang fight that absolutely rips. A messy ride for sure, but the fan service carries it.” - Shahbaz (The Movie Podcast)
  • “A lot of the CGi and the cinematography in Mortal Kombat II looks either extremely uninspired or highly unpolished, what the hell is wrong with Baraka? Jade without hair might as well be Johnny Cage without the attitude. Shao Khan looks great though, but that’s barely a win.” - Derek “The FURIOUS Shiller” Brocks

My Thoughts: Mortal Kombat II has never been a film that I’ve had particularly high on my most anticipated lists. Video games haven’t really done it for me just yet. Mortal Kombat as a world isn’t one that has engaged me the way it has with so many other people for years and years. Honestly, the reviews I’m seeing for this movie are about what I expected. There’s people praising all of the fun to be had in regards to the carnage candy, action, and the characters. Karl Urban as Johnny Cage seems to be a lot of fun in this movie, which isn’t too surprising when considering that Urban can be a very fun actor. The reviews for the movie have all been good, but none of them have been great or praising the film. The fact that a lot of the reviews are saying that the film is very thin on story and the script isn’t too surprising. At the same time, I don’t think anybody was going into this movie expecting a great Oscar level script. The fact that some of the reviews talk about the look of the film and the CGI not being great, is a bit concerning because there’s a lot of CGI and effects in a Mortal Kombat film. Overall, this doesn’t really change my excitement for the film. It sounds like Mortal Kombat fans that were disappointed in the 2021 will get the better verison of that film.
