2026 SAG Awards Recap! What Does It Mean for the Oscars?
Last night were the SAG awards, one of the last major award shows before the Oscars (which is still two weeks away). That means it’s time to discuss what happened at the SAG awards and more importantly, what does it mean for the Oscars?
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: This is one that’s been interesting this entire awards season. Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein) won at Critics Choice, Stellen Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) won at Golden Globes, and then Sean Penn (One Battle After Another) won at BAFTA. That means that every single ceremony we got a different winner. I guessed wrong on this one, I thought that Jacob Elordi was going to win at SAG. With Sean Penn winning at BAFTA and SAG, I think that makes him the Oscar front runner. For the first time this awards season, we have an Oscar front runner in supporting actor. Prior to the wins I just talked about, Benicio del Toro (One Battle After Another) was doing very well with critics groups. But he hasn’t won a televised award all season. With Sean Penn winning at BAFTA and SAG, that makes him the front runner for the Oscar.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: I was so happy about this one, Amy Madigan won for Weapons. I was getting nervous that the hype train for Amy Madigan died down. She won the award at Critics Choice back in January. But she lost at the Golden Globe and wasn’t even nominated at BAFTA. But I felt like she was going to win SAG. SAG loves horror performances and also love showy and over the top performances, and Amy Madigan fits that. When Orlando Bloom said “Amy Madigan” I was so hyped. Now, Madigan has Critics Choice and SAG, does she win the Oscar? I don’t know. There’s a good chance that she does, it’s looking bright for her. But she’s the lone nomination for Weapons, and nowadays it’s hard for an actor to win the Oscar for being its lone nomination. I don’t think Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another wins the Oscar. She’s only won the Golden Globe, and that’s not enough for her to win. Maybe she has enough momentum because One Battle After Another is the clear front runner for best picture. Madigan winning at SAG certainly improves her chances at the Oscars, does she win? I don’t know.
BEST ACTRESS: There’s not much to say about this category, Jessie Buckley won for Hamnet. I’m not at all surprised by that. She’s winning the Oscar, this is the acting category that I’m most confident in.
BEST ACTOR + ENSEMBLE: This is one that I wanted to talk about together because they went to the same film. Sinners had a big night last night. I predicted Sinners to win two awards at SAG. One was Michael B. Jordan for lead actor and Sinners for best ensemble. The two awards Sinners won were the ones I predicted. Some people are saying that because of this, Sinners could win Best Picture at the Oscars? I’ll say this win makes Sinners a strong second place. One Battle After Another won the top prize at Critics Choice, Golden Globe, BAFTA, DGA, and PGA. It’s probably going to win the WGA. One Battle After Another is still the front runner for Best Picture. But there’s a world and a chance that Sinners win. How good is that chance? I don’t know, but it’s a good chance. I’ll say the thing it does for Sinners, is that I think Michael B. Jordan is the new Best Actor front runner. Timothée Chalamet won at Critics Choice and Golden Globe, and he got nominated everywhere. But he lost at BAFTA and SAG, that’s a big deal. I said Chalamet is in trouble after BAFTA but if he wins at SAG then he’s ok. He lost at SAG and he hasn’t won anything since January. There’s still a world where Chalamet can win, but overall Chalamet’s in trouble. I do believe Sinners is going to win at least one acting award at the Oscars and right now, I’m predicting Michael B. Jordan. I’m so happy about these wins. Sinners is my favorite Best Picture nominee and Jordan was my favorite performance in the lead actor category. With Sinners winning major awards at SAG and Oscar voting ending later this week, Sinners is looking real good right now. Like I said, I don’t think it takes the best picture. I think Sinners tightened the lead with One Battle After Another a good bit.
