Actors Need to Be Careful About Political Opinions on Social Media! Should There Be Punishments?
It’s safe to say that the current political climate has a lot of issues. There’s so much toxicity and divisiveness that goes on in the world. Because of that many celebrities and actors need and should be careful about what they put out on the internet. Here’s my thoughts on this topic!
My Thoughts
This has sort of been this topic of conversation on the internet especially with what’s been going on in the United States recently. I don’t wanna comment on my thoughts with what’s been going on. But because of what’s happening there’s a lot of celebrities speaking out against it and there’s fans on both sides of the political spectrum frustrated by this. Why is that?
Well I think the big issue with this is that celebrities are not experts on politics. Celebrities are experts in acting, singing, whatever it may be. The reason Mark Ruffalo or Pedro Pascal or Taylor Swift have massive followings and fan bases is because we like them as performers. We like Ruffalo as the Hulk, we love Pascal as The Mandalorian, and we like Taylor Swift because of her music. Celebrities over the last few years have been very vocal on the internet about their political opinions and trying to sway people, there’s a side of that that I understand. They have a platform where they can share opinions and people will listen to them. But that doesn’t mean that they should be acting as an expert in politics or the modern political climate.
There’s been several examples of celebrities getting mad at their fans over their political opinions. That’s not a good look on the celebrity if they don’t like their fans that have different political opinions from them. After Donald Trump won the election in 2024, Rachel Zegler said some not so kind things about Republicans and the people that follow her that are Republican. Celebrities need and should be careful about how they express their opinions. I respect free speech 100%, everybody should have that right. I’m not saying that celebrities shouldn’t share their political opinions at all but they should remember that they’re a celebrity first, not a politician.
There’s been a number of instances over the years about actors getting fired from major projects and studios because they voiced their political opinions. The most notable ones of the decade being Gina Carano and Melissa Barrera. Both of them caused enormous amounts of uproar from people frustrated and mad about them being fired. I think Carano’s tweets are very irresponsible of her to share, but I think the element that made people confused and frustrated is that Pedro Pascal made similar comments but didn’t get fired for it. The Melissa Barrera situation is a bit more complicated because nobody has seen the tweets that got her fired from the Scream franchise. We look at these examples and I believe that all actors and celebrities should be held to the same standards, and if they get too crazy on the internet then they should be punished and possibly fired for it. I don’t know if they should put this in contracts. Because celebrities being weird on the internet with their political opinions isn’t just bad for their reputation but it affects the movie or tv shows that they’re promoting. Actors are the spokesperson for the project and if they get stupid they hurt the reputation of the project, and that’s not good. It makes people not want to support that project or any future projects because that actor is in it.
