Fast and Furious 11 Might Not Happen! What’s Going On?

The Fast and Furious franchise has gotten interesting and kind of sad updates recently regarding the production and status of the film. As a fan of this franchise, I’m a bit curious and concerned with these comments. Let’s talk about it!

What’s Been Going On?

So, if you don’t know exactly what’s going on, basically there’s some trouble happening with the production of Fast and Furious 11 or Fast X: Part II, an official title hasn’t been revealed yet. A bunch of people have been wondering what’s going on with all of this because Fast X released in May 2023 and it ended on a cliffhanger. Whenever a film ends on a cliffhanger the next installment is planned to release within the next year, sometimes delays happen that push it back. In the case of Fast and Furious, the eleventh film hasn’t even been shot and there’s no release date set for this film. There’s been a lot of confusion recently about what’s been going on. Recently, Jason Momoa said this in an interview “I would love to come back and play, man. People all over the world love that character, it’s crazy. But I got no script, so not that soon.” The main villain of the last film hasn’t even seen a script for the film, that’s crazy. What’s even weirder about it is that back in June, Vin Diesel said at a public event that the film will release in April 2027. With these reports and updates recently, that sounds like a lie that the film is actually going to release soon.

The drama expands because of Fast X’s budget. That film is infamous for having one of the biggest blockbuster budgets of all time. The film cost $340 million to make. Look it’s a big expensive film with a bunch of movie stars but it should not be $340 million. As a point of reference, the second most expensive film of the franchise is The Fate of the Furious with a $250 million budget. $250 million is still a lot for a Fast and Furious movie, but it was more justifiable because it was coming after Furious 7 that made $1.5 billion at the box office. Fast X was coming off of F9 at $719 million and it’s not a film that has great reviews. In ScreenRant’s article about this topic, this is what they said “According to those close to the production, the most recent draft of the Part 2 script would require a budget of about $250 million, but the studio doesn’t want to make the movie for more than $200 million. Cast is a major part of the budget, with Diesel said to make around $25 million per installment, and other supporting members fetching between $2 million and $10 million.” That doesn’t really surprise me that part of the problem with the enormous budget is the big cast. Of course, Vin Diesel will get a big paycheck because this is his franchise. Michelle Rodriguez probably gets a good paycheck. Even more of the problem with the next installment is you have The Rock returning, The Rock will probably get a good size paycheck. He’ll probably be second billed in the movie behind Vin Diesel. If Vin Diesel isn’t willing to take a pay cut in order for this film to happen, I think that shows how big his ego is.

The fact that Universal doesn’t want the budget to be over $200 million makes a lot of sense to me. Fast X grossed $709 million at the box office, that’s a strong number for the 11th entry in the franchise. It’s also the lowest performing Fast and Furious film at the domestic box office since Tokyo Drift in 2006. But your franchise has a $340 million budget, suddenly the film needs to make over $1 billion. A milestone that the franchise hasn’t reached in almost 10 years. Universal doesn’t want to lose more money, they want to make money. Assuming that Fast and Furious 11 makes about as much as Fast X, having a $180 million budget means you’re going to make back a good profit. But if they make this movie for another $340 million then it’s going to lose a lot of money. There’s a chance this one will get a big box office boost if they market it as the final film. There's more urgency and curiosity to see how it ends but even then it probably won’t make the budget back. The $180 million budget for the Fast and Furious movie is very reasonable, that’s what these should be and they’d all be best profitable.
