Did People Bandwagon Hate on The Flash? My Thoughts on Andy Muschietti Comments!

The director of The Flash, Andy Muschietti is currently doing press for IT: Welcome to Derry. During the press tour he was asked about the reception to The Flash and had some comments I thought were rather interesting. What did I think about them? Let’s talk about it!

Andy Muschietti’s Quote: “A lot of people did not see it. But you know how things are these days, people don’t see things, but they like to talk sh*t about it, and they like to jump on bandwagons. They don’t really know. People are angry for reasons that are unrelated to these things.”

My Thoughts

If you’ve been on the internet at any point in time since The Flash came out, you know that it’s been a very interesting conversation. The film became one of the biggest box office bombs of all time making about $270 million against a $250 million budget. It’s sort of been a punching bag movie because of the bad CGI, Ezra Miller, and the downfall of the DCEU happening while this film was being promoted. Muschietti has made several quotes this year about The Flash bombing and my biggest problem with these quotes and he doesn’t want to blame himself, he blames the fans. Earlier this year he said quotes about how The Flash bombed because people don’t like The Flash and women didn’t show up. That’s the stupidest reason I’ve heard for why The Flash bombed. He follows that up months later with quotes like that blaming the fans and audiences for why The Flash bombed at the box office. However, I think his reasoning and logic of people hating on it is more valid.

As I said earlier, The Flash became a punching bag movie from June 2023 to October 2025. People were taking scenes and moments out of context and spreading them all over the internet. The film is infamous for having terrible CGI whether that’s the multiverse PS2 looking characters, the CGI cameos in the third act, and all of the obvious reshoots the movie had. People would either clip them out or post pictures of them all around the internet. People would see shots from the movie without context, see how terrible they look and decide that they want to hate the film. Related to the CGI, they did some stuff in the third of bringing back dead actors with CGI for the film. Most notably they did this with Christopher Reeves, I don’t have an issue with that as long as they get permission from the family. There’s a lot of people that no matter what sort of permission they get, they reject that idea. There’s people that were even trying to spread hate and the “offensive image” of CGI Christopher Reeves across the internet to get people to hate on it.

The other thing that you have to talk about in relation to The Flash and how it was received is of course Ezra Miller. Once all of that weird stuff started to come out about him, people were wondering if the film was going to be canceled or if Ezra was going to be recast. None of that happened and WB didn’t even address it in any meaningful sense. People didn’t want to support the film because they don’t like Ezra Miller, that’s completely fair. People were even wanting the film to fail because of Ezra and so they were sabotaging the film in any way they could so they were trying to spread a narrative about the film that it’s one of the worst comic book movies of all time and it’s simply not. I’ve always been positive about the film but acknowledge that the film has a lot of issues and it’s not as good as I hoped it would be. I do think that the basic idea of trying to sabotage a film because of bad CGI or a star that you don’t like is so weird and toxic.

To sum up my thoughts, I do think there was bandwagoning going on with The Flash. It was an easy target that was released during an unfortunate era for both comic book movies and the DCEU. I still think Muschietti should and needs to point the blame towards himself about why The Flash flopped, but I do think he’s right in the fact that bandwagoning did happen with The Flash
