Upcoming Star Wars Projects Ranked by Excitement

Upcoming Star Wars Projects Ranked by Excitement

Star Wars hasn’t been in their best run over the last several years. But that’s not stopping them from continuing to put out projects. As of right now, there’s NINE movies & tv shows that Lucasfilm has in development. Here’s my ranking of all the nine upcoming Star Wars projects. Let’s get started!

9. Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Film (TBA): A common theme with most of these projects are ones that were announced years back but haven’t gotten much updates. In the case of Taika’s film, this was announced back in January 2020 and since then no updates have been made about the film, except for Taika’s comments that have killed almost all excitement for this film. He said in an interview that this film is going to piss people off. It’s hard to take him seriously with this kind of stuff when he says all of these things and you don’t know if he’s joking or being serious. When the Star Wars fandom is so divided we want a Star Wars film that’s going to bring people together not divide them even more. Also, I’ve seen about four of his films and I feel he’s a bit of a one hit wonder with Thor Ragnarok, I haven’t really cared for any of the other films. Based on his personality that makes him come across as a jerk mixed with me not being a fan of his films, this is a film that I can’t be excited about. Especially with how goofy and ridiculous Love and Thunder got, I don’t know if I want a Star Wars movie that has a goofy tone like that. Easily, this film is in last place and if it gets canceled I’m not going to be disappointed.

8. Dave Filoni’s Mandoverse Film (TBA): At one point, I probably would’ve been very excited for this film. The idea of doing an Avengers Endgame style film that combines The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka sounds awesome. But with it being unlikely that The Book of Boba Fett will continue and a fourth season of The Mandalorian being uncertain, this is another film that I don't know if it’s going to happen. Beyond that, when they announce this film, they don’t give many updates about the announcement and film The Mandalorian and Grogu, I just feel like whatever this film was going to be got moved over The Mandalorian and Grogu. I haven’t seen all of Dave Filoni’s work within Star Wars. Of the projects I have seen I think a majority of them are good, but he really only works within one corner of the Star Wars universe which is characters tied to The Clone Wars. The inherent nature of what this film could be, means that he’s moving away from that corner and I don’t know if he’s the right guy to be doing that. I did a version of this ranking back whenever this film was announced and I think it higher, but with it being multiple years and no updates and a lack of faith it’ll happen I can’t get super excited for this film.

7. Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Film (TBA): Between this film and Taika’s film, these are the ones that we know the least about. All of the other projects there’s at least something about them that we know. In the case of this film, we only know that Simon Kinberg is attached as the director. Granted I don’t have as much of a lack of faith in this project happening, because it hasn’t even been a year since this film was announced. The other thing that raises my excitement for it is when this film was announced that he’d be doing an entire trilogy. Whatever Kinberg’s pitch was, Lucasfilm was somewhat excited to give me an entire trilogy. Will that entire trilogy actually happen? Only time will tell, but that’s at least something to get me excited. Of the films on the list, this is probably the one that I don’t have any negative or positive opinions about. The other projects I’m either conflicted on, not excited for, or very excited for, in the case of this film I don’t have any strong emotions. Kind of the problem with so many of these projects, I don’t know if it’ll actually happen.

6. Rey’s New Jedi Order (TBA): This is one that has gone through quite the pre-production where at multiple points it seemed like they were getting ready to shoot and then something happened that caused them to delay filming. They’ve brought in multiple writers to try and get something made. Daisy Ridley has made multiple comments about the film’s progress and you can kind of tell that she’s just frustrated and wants something more positive to say about the film. Beyond that, they got Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to direct it, who’s primarily done documentaries in foreign countries. She doesn’t seem like the right fit to direct a $200 million+ blockbuster film. At the same time, this is one that I’m still very curious about because I think Rey could be a very fascinating and interesting character. But with poorly managed the sequel trilogy I didn’t feel like we saw our potential as a well rounded, fully developed character. I just have a lot of conflicted thoughts on this film, I hope it happens because there’s something interesting to tell and I just want to see Daisy Ridley have a win.

5. The Mandalorian & Grogu (May 22nd, 2026): This is an exciting movie to come out because it’s the next Star Wars movie and first Star Wars movie to release in seven years. Apparently we almost got the first trailer a couple days back but due to our country’s situation, it got pushed back. This is one that I think with a trailer could easily move up or down. I didn’t hate season 3 of The Mandalorian but it was a big step down and between that and The Book of Boba Fett, my overall excitement for anything Mandalorian related has just gone down. There’s some things I’m very curious about, mainly Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White joining the cast. White is playing Jabba’s son which makes me very curious for what this film is actually about because that’s an interesting and specific character to have in this film. There is just a side of me that’s excited to finally get a Star Wars movie back on the big screen, it’s been a long time so it’ll be exciting to see this world in a movie format not a tv show format. I like The Mandalorian as a character, Grogu is of course a lot of fun. The fact that Jon Favreau is directing this film gets me excited because when he does great Star Wars it’s fantastic.

4. James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi (TBA): This is another one that was announced years back and still hasn’t gotten much updates about the film. The basic idea of this film tackling the story of the very first Jedi is very exciting to me. I like it when Star Wars goes to a new time and place that’s not connected to The Skywalker Saga. The story of the very first Jedi sounds interesting to me, it’s a story that I want to know about. The film was described as the biblical epic which is very interesting and cool language to use to describe a Star Wars movie. I haven’t done a full on deep dive into James Mangold’s filmography but of the films that I’ve seen, he’s done a lot of really solid ones, a few of them I love like Logan and Ford v Ferrari. There’s a lot about this film that has me very excited. Perhaps if we had more information like more of the story, a cast, or whatever I think this film could move up into the top three. As of now, I just don’t always trust that these films will actually happen, especially when it’s YEARS between them being announced and a real update on the project.

3. Maul: Shadow Lord (2026): This is a new animated tv show that’s coming to Disney+ about Darth Maul. It’s said that this show will take place after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and that just sounds very cool to me. The animation style is said to be very similar to what The Clone Wars was. That has me very excited as The Clone Wars was one of those pivotal childhood tv shows that I watched on loop.  They did a lot of very cool and interesting things with Darth Maul making a far more interesting character then what we got in The Phantom Menace. Star Wars have vocally said they want stories that aren’t told from the era of Attack of the Clones to A New Hope. I’d agree with that, but I think a Darth Maul lead show sounds different enough that I don’t have that concern or feeling with this show. I hope they follow up on some of the stuff that was teased in Solo: A Star Wars Story and follow that up in this format. We don’t know much about it, I’m very curious to get a trailer and see what it is and how it fits into the Star Wars canon.

2. Ahsoka Season 2 (TBA): I liked but didn’t love season one, but there’s still a lot of elements that have me very excited. One of the more surprising things about season one was the fact that it ended on a cliffhanger teasing the final battle with Thrawn and having season two resolve that conflict. They did such a great job of building Thrawn up as this great villain that you want to see him taken down. I really like the character of Ahsoka as a whole, once again going back to my younger days of watching The Clone Wars. We know that Hayden Christensen is returning as Anakin and based on some of Ewan McGregor’s recent quotes indicates that maybe he’s returning for season two. If we get those characters reuniting hopefully in their Clone Wars attire that’ll be awesome. I did enjoy season one a good bit, it certainly had its flaws but the things it got right, it got really right. With a lot of the same creative team coming back for season two I have faith that this’ll be another solid season of Star Wars. Any content we get that’s another adventure in Star Wars sounds good to me.

1. Star Wars: Starfighter (May 28th, 2027): This is a film that I’ve been very excited for ever since it was announced. The more we’ve learned about this film, the more I’ve been for it. First up, I think Shawn Levy is an underrated director that has done a lot of very solid films over the years, most notably Deadpool & Wolverine. Second, there’s just a great cast here with Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, and Aaron Pierre. All great actors that Shawn Levy recruited this much talent for a film makes me think that the script is very good. And it’s also several actors that I wouldn’t have expected to be in a Star Wars film. Third, the film is about a Starfighter pilot and that’s something new for the Star Wars world and I’m excited to see what a Star Wars movie focused on Starfighters looks like. I’m guessing it’s gonna be a bit of Top Gun in the world of Star Wars, once again sounds awesome to me and something different. That’s really the key thing about this film. It feels like something different and I think different is something that Star Wars needs instead of doing very similar nostalgia bait projects and cameos. The fact that we have a full cast and they’ve started filming makes this film feel more tangible than other projects on this list.
