Upcoming DC Movies Ranked by Excitement

Upcoming DC Movies Ranked by Excitement

DC has a lot of very exciting movies coming out in the future. Right now seems like the perfect time to stop and rank 12 upcoming DC movies based on excitement. How do I rank them? Let’s find out!

12. Static Shock (TBA): This is a film that was announced at DC Fandome in August 2020 and since then we’ve gotten almost zero updates about the film. This is DC's equivalent to Blade as I don’t think either one of these movies is actually going to come out. Beyond that, I’m not familiar with Static Shock as a character. I know there was an animated tv show about him that I’ve never watched. Some recent quotes by James Gunn indicate that there’s legal issues going on with this film and the character and that’s why it’s taking so long for this film to come out. That’s not an issue with the movie, but it is something that hurts my excitement knowing that we might not ever see this film. The one thing about it that does interest me is Michael B. Jordan is attached as a producer on the film, he’s very talented and he has a lot of freedom to do whatever he wants. If he wants to tell Static Shock’s story then maybe there’s something in the ideas that could get me very excited. Once (or if) we get more positive updates about the film, it could move up on this list. As of now, I don’t feel like I can put this any higher than last place.

11. Wonder Woman (TBA): This will obviously be our introduction to Wonder Woman in the DCU. This isn’t something that I’m immediately super excited about. We got two Wonder Woman films in the DCEU, one was great the other one was not so great I didn’t hate it though. With the information we have, I don’t know what makes this Wonder Woman different from Gal Gadot’s films. Once we know specifics regarding the plot and the angle of this film I could get very excited for it and it could EASILY move up on this list. There’s all sorts of rumored casting for Wonder Woman herself, specifically Adria Arjona from Andor and Hit Man. If that casting actually happens I’d be totally down. Another thing that has me excited is the film is written by Ana Nogueira, who doesn’t have many screenwriting credits but she wrote Supergirl that’s releasing next year. I guess James Gunn liked working with her because she’s now also writing this film as well as the DCU’s Teen Titans film. That gives me confidence about the projects she’s writing where she’s writing three of them before her first one even releases.

10. Dynamic Duo (June 30th, 2028): This is an animated theatrical DC film that’s about the friendship between Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. It’s going to be a mix of three different animation styles from puppetry, stop-motion animation, and CGI which sounds interesting and has me curious for what this film is going to look like. We also don’t know if this film is DCU or if it’s Elseworlds. This seems like the type of project that’ll be Elseworlds and not connected to James Gunn’s DCU because with it being more niche I think it’ll work better that way. On paper, this should be a film that I’m very excited about and ranking it much higher. But as of now, I’m not feeling a story about Robin with it being unclear if Batman is actually in the film. It seems weird to have a Robin lead film before we establish this universe’s Batman. Also, they’ve brought in new writers to rewrite the film so whatever the script was that they had before wasn’t quite working out. But maybe this new version of the script will be a very solid version and be a great script that hooks me on what makes this film cool.

9. The Authority (TBA): This is one of the DCU films that was announced back in January 2023 when James Gunn announced the full slate of the DCU. This is one that’s a bit frustrating to rank because James Gunn has said that multiple drafts were turned in but the film wasn’t coming together so it’s not a priority for them right now. This is a perfect example of why I like Gunn’s comments so much. He’s not rushing this film out, he wants to do it and he wants to get it right but he’s not going to release a film with a bad script. This is a project that I’m very curious about because it seems like James Gunn really wants it to happen. Also, The Engineer who was introduced in Superman is a member of the team so if this happens it’ll add another piece to how the DCU is connected between characters. At the same time, since this isn’t as much of a priority for DC I can’t rank it higher on the list. The concept of The Authority being an evil version of the Justice League is a concept that’s been played out a lot over the last several years, but they are interesting stories to tell. I hope this movie comes out because I think it can be very interesting.

8. Swamp Thing (TBA): Another film that was announced in 2023 but hasn’t gotten much updates. What’s helping out Swamp Thing is James Mangold is attached as the director. James Mangold is a very solid director and he has a solid track record with comic book nerds, specifically with Logan. It’s also described as a horror film which sounds cool because it feels like something different for the genre. We don’t have a lot of horror films within the genre and Swamp Thing feels like an interesting character to do this with. I like it when comic book movies pull in outside inspiration from other genres because it provides a fresh new experience for comic book movies and so many of the great comic book movies feel different. I’m not super familiar with Swamp Thing so a movie about him specifically isn’t something I can get super excited for. I feel like I need more information to get more excited about the film besides Mangold directing it and hopefully it comes soon because it’s been almost three years since this film was announced.

7. Batman: The Brave and the Bold (TBA): Yet again another film that was announced in January 2023 but in the case of this film we know more about it. First up we know that Andy Muschietti, the director of IT and The Flash is directing the film. James Gunn has even made comments recently that indicate a script is almost done which means filming could start soon. Batman is my favorite superhero of all time and I’m always excited whenever a new Batman movie is coming out. The specific details we know about the film involving the Batfamily and getting a proper version of Robin sounds very cool to me. With that said, I’m not thrilled about Andy Muschietti directing the film. I didn’t hate The Flash but it was a disappointment and he used a lot of CGI with both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton and I don’t want a CGI heavy Batman film, especially when it’s likely to be bad CGI. With how disastrous The Flash did at the box office, I wouldn’t be surprised if Muschietti leaves the film because I think his name attached will hurt the excitement for so many people. There’s just a few things about the film that hold back my excitement but overall I’m still very excited and once we get more concrete information about it I could get very excited for it.

6. Teen Titans (TBA): Teen Titans have obviously done very well on television with two animated shows and a live action show. But we’ve never seen the team brought to the big screen and I’m just excited for that. Specifically with this movie I feel like I can see how it connects to the rest of the DCU. If Batman: The Brave and the Bold is going to focus on Damian Wayne that could set up his role in this film. Beyond that, we know that Blue Beetle from Blue Beetle in 2023 is appearing in the DCU and his character could even appear in this film as a member. Going back to what I said earlier about Ana Nogueira writing it makes me think that James Gunn likes working with her and the work she’s doing if she’s writing or written three movies. I always like it when we tell stories from a different point of view. When Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel were introduced into the MCU, we got to see the MCU through the events of teenage superheroes which were new and different. When you do Teen Titans you can tell a different story of seeing this world of superheroes from the perspective of teenagers or younger heroes.

5. Bane & Deathstroke (TBA): This is one of the latest films announced by DC and we don’t know much about it, but the basic ideas we do know are enough to get me very excited. I think Bane and Deathstroke are some of the most interesting and best Batman villains. We’ve gotten Bane on the big screen before but I want a comic accurate take on the character done right. We’ve seen Deathstroke a lot on television but have never actually seen him on the big screen. Two characters that I’m a big fan of being introduced in this populated DC universe sounds very cool and something I’d enjoy. When this was announced I saw people draw comparisons to the SPUMC movie and why are people excited for this movie but frustrated with Sony for making villain lead films. I think the big difference between the two is that Bane and Deathstroke are going to exist in a world pre-populated with DC characters, we know Batman exists in this universe so it’s not like we’re doing Bane and Deathstroke in a pocket universe. The person who is writing and directing the film isn’t somebody with a lot of credits, but that doesn’t really affect my excitement for it.

4. Clayface (September 11th, 2026): This is one that was sort of rushed into production where it wasn’t on the slate that James Gunn announced and was only announced late 2024 and they’ve already started filming with a September 2026 release date. The fact that James Gunn and DC were excited about this film and wanted it to be made straight away gives me faith that this’ll be something very cool. It sounds like it’s going to be The Substance in the DC universe which sounds awesome. That’s something so wildly new and different from anything we’ve gotten in the past. Mike Flanagan, one of the most popular names in horror gifts now is a producer and writer on the film. The set photos we’ve gotten have been really cool and make it look like something different. One concern or question I have about the film is I’m just curious about what this film is going to be before Batman is introduced in this world. That’s kind of the same thing with Bane & Deathstroke, I’m just curious what does that mean when they’re giving Batman villains their own movie before Batman is introduced or even gets first film.

3. Supergirl (June 26th, 2026): The next major comic book film to release which is weird considering it’s 9 months away. This is one that moved up the list a good bit simply because I loved Superman. Superman is one of my favorite movies of the year and made me excited for the future of the DCU and wanting to see more stories in this universe. Supergirl is the next step in that process. With James Gunn putting all of his eggs in the Superfamily basket it makes me curious about how this film ties into Man of Tomorrow and other stories with Superman and Supergirl in there. Beyond that there’ve been early test screenings for the film and all of the reactions coming out of them have been really good, people seem to be loving this film. I think it’s a lot of fun that Jason Momoa is Lobo in the film. It’s the most obvious casting choice of all time but sometimes those are the best types of casting. If you’ve seen Lobo in the comics or other forms of media you know that his personality goes perfectly with who Jason Momoa is in real life. Hopefully by the end of year we get a trailer and with that my excitement could move up.

2. Man of Tomorrow (July 9th, 2027): The latest film on this list to be announced and it’s not surprising that Superman got a sequel. We don’t know too much information about this film except that Superman and Lex Luthor will be teaming up to stop a bigger threat. Based on Gunn’s tweets Lex Luthor will be getting the green and purple mech suit. The rumor going around is that Brainiac is the main villain of the film, that’s awesome and it’s cool we’ll get to see him in live action. Apparently whatever happens in Peacemaker Season 2 affects this film in a major way. Basically all of the information we know about the film comes from James Gunn’s social media or interviews. As somebody who loved Superman and the characters in Superman I’m excited to spend more time in this world with these characters and further explore the DC universe. I find James Gunn’s batting average to be very good, so whenever he’s working on a comic book project it gets me very excited because I trust that it’ll be really good. Hopefully we get casting soon as filming is set to start early next year and we see who’s joining and whose returning.

1. The Batman: Part II (October 1st, 2027): The long delayed film that’s also looking to be filming in 2026 around the same time as Man of Tomorrow. The Batman is probably my favorite movie of the decade and I’ve been excited for this film ever since it was announced because Matt Reeves crafted a Gotham that I want to spend more time in. Based on quotes from Reeves it sounds like the sequel is going to be doing exactly that. He’s hinted at the villains of the movie being something we haven’t seen in live action which makes me very curious and speculating what he means and which villains we’ll be seeing. With how good The Penguin was it raised my confidence in this universe and that Matt Reeves knows what he’s doing with this universe and he has finger on the pulse of it. Sometimes films that have multiple delays can hurt my excitement for the film. But I don’t feel that way about this film because I trust the creative team and I look at it as if they're taking their time because they want to make sure the script is right and perfect. When mixing my love of The Batman, The Penguin, and my overall excitement for anything Batman related this is my #1 most anticipated DC movie.
