The Simpsons Movie 2 Releasing in 2028! Is It A Good Idea? Is It Too Late?

The Simpsons Movie 2 Releasing in 2027! Is It A Good Idea?

Fans of The Simpsons got some exciting news yesterday. We got news that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is releasing in 2027. I have some thoughts on this, so I wanted to share my thoughts on this project. Let’s get started!

General Thoughts

If you don’t know, I love The Simpsons. I think their stuff in the early ‘90s from 3-8 is some of the best and funniest television of all time. It’s so sharp, so clever, and decades later it’s still really funny. And I think The Simpsons Movie is actually pretty great. It still has all of the inappropriate humor and hijinks you expect from the show. But it’s told in 90 minutes and it’s so well done, it’s quoteable, and I love it. But the running gag with The Simpsons is that the show doesn’t want to seem to die. The show started in 1989, 15 years before I was born and it’s still going. Fox renewed the show for a 40th season which is crazy that The Simpsons will be going on for 40 years. I saw a tweet on Twitter that said “there could be an apocalyptic event that kills all of humanity but The Simpsons would still be on tv.” I hear this and I go, that sounds about right.

The fact that 20 years after The Simpsons Movie came out, they’re releasing a sequel is very interesting to me and it seems too late. There is a joke for the long wait where in one of the episodes Bart wrote on the chalkboard “I will not wait 20 years for another movie.” Right now, The Simpsons Movie 2 is scheduled to release 20 years after the original..almost to the day. That was probably intentional which is why it’s been 20 years since the original came out. But that still doesn’t change the fact that 20 years between the sequels for a Simpsons movie just seems like way too much. The show has had a big drop off in quality for years now. Even when the first movie came out, the show wasn’t in its prime; it hadn’t been its prime for a decade. This movie is coming out almost three decades after the show was in its prime, it just feels very late and should’ve come out years ago.

The other concern to raise with this film is that comedy is very timely. Comedy is an evolving medium where what was in decades past isn’t funny in 2025. With how sensitive people are to comedy and how edgy The Simpsons can be at points that doesn’t seem like the right film given today’s political climate and I’m not sure how that’ll work. I haven’t watched any recent episodes of the show all that much so I’m not sure how the comedy in the show has evolved and changed. I’m so curious how exactly this is all going to work and if the movie is going to be like the great episodes of The Simpsons or the bad episodes because I could see it going either way. And I just don’t know what to expect from this film, I hope it’s close to the quality of the original but we’ll just have to wait and see.
