LEGO Batman 4 Announced! My Thoughts!
A couple days back we got the announcement that LEGO Batman 4 is officially in development and will be releasing in 2026. It’s titled LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. This is a game that I’m very excited for, for a number of different reasons. Let’s get started!
Point of Reference: To state the obvious, I’m a massive Batman fan and that was my gateway into pop culture and nerdy stuff. I grew up watching Batman movies and tv shows and played a lot of Batman video games. In fact, the video games I grew up playing were the LEGO games. Not just LEGO Batman but also Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and so much more. I’ve been waiting for another LEGO game to be announced because I want to play more of those games. It’s been 10 years since the last LEGO Batman video game so it was bound to happen at some point. On Tuesday, TT Games announced that this game was in development and my excitement went up very high. In this blog post I want to unpack everything that was said, including the good and the bad.
- It’ll Adapt the Movies: I actually did a blog post at the beginning of August about 10 LEGO video games I’d want to see happen. In there I basically pitched this idea of you doing a Batman game that’s adapting the movies. When they announced that’s what this game was going to be I immediately thought that I should sue them because they stole my idea. In all seriousness, I think this is a really cool idea that can provide a lot of variety into this video game. It potentially ranges from Adam West to Robert Pattinson. In that regard, the different abilities and characters available from those worlds are pretty incredible and robust. LEGO Batman 3 gave us a tease of what to expect. Where a bonus level was inspired by Batman the Movie (1966) and The Dark Knight was a DLC on that game. But getting a full length feature game I think is something very cool. It’s a game that’ll be true to the previous LEGO Batman games because it’s adapting movies and not doing original levels. Getting to choose which Batman you play as will be awesome, Christian Bale is my favorite Batman and I’d love to play around as him. One thing I hope they do is have fun dialogue between the different Batman. In LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga if you have certain characters on screen together fun dialogue will happen. For example, if you have Darth Vader and Kylo Ren on screen the dialogue is Kylo geeking out about meeting Vader.
- New Combat Style: Based on the information we know it sounds like the basics like collecting studs, Red Bricks, puzzles, and more will be included. But the big thing they’re adding is combat that’s inspired by the Batman Arkham games. Which is another gaming franchise that I grew up with. Batman: Arkham City is my favorite video game of all time. That sounds awesome because it's a new style for these games but it’s also further exploring the idea of a celebration of Batman. That’s really what makes me the most excited for this game is that it feels like a celebration of Batman from all sorts of media from movies to video games to maybe tv shows. I’d love it if we could get bonus levels that are from Batman: The Brave and the Bold because that was one of my favorite shows growing up.
- Limited Playable Characters: This is something that I’m a bit nervous and confused by. On the game’s official website it says that they’re only seven playable characters including Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Jim Gordon, and Talia al Ghul. Having only seven characters in the video game is very weird because part of the fun of these characters is saying the large robust character grid filled with DC characters. I’m curious if that’s referring to only in the levels we’ll be playing as those characters but throughout the game you’re unlocking other characters like Alfred, Joker, and more classic Batman villains. If it’s only seven playable characters that seems weird and loses some of the magic of LEGO video games. If we get to run around as different Batman, it’ll be cool if we run around as Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger or Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell or whatever.
- Difficulty Levels: This another new feature that they’re including where players can say what level difficulty they want. This is something that I’m very curious to learn more information about. The big question I have is that are the levels different based on the difficulty or are they all the same levels that have a different difficulty. Once again, I like that they’re doing something new and different. With this game they’re doing a lot of things that haven’t been done before and seeing what elements of those works and what elements maybe frustrated people and they won’t continue after this. I don’t really have too much to comment on this specific topic but it is something that intrigues me. When they’ve made almost 20 LEGO video games, trying to find whatever you can to make it stand out and unique is always a positive.
Overall Thoughts: As you can tell there’s a lot of things in here that I’m very excited about and in a lot of ways it’s the LEGO Batman game that I’ve been waiting for. The elements that they’ve described of being a celebration of everything Batman from movies to other video games just sounds very cool to me. I am a bit concerned about it sounding like it’ll have a limited character roaster, I hope it’s much bigger. The other bummer is that they’re only releasing the game on the new video games consoles and I don’t have any of them. So maybe I need to buy a new gaming console just so I can play this game.
