Thor’s Future in the MCU! What Does Chris Hemsworth’s Message Mean?
In 568 days, Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters. Filming has started (maybe with a finished script). A couple days back, Chris Hemsworth released a video on social media celebrating Thor’s legacy and being grateful for his time in the MCU. This made some people curious about Thor’s future in the MCU. Let’s talk about it!
What Did He Say?: Like I just said, this message comes from Chris Hemsworth’s social media accounts. He posted a video celebrating Thor’s legacy in the MCU and thanking Marvel and the fans. This was the caption for the video. “Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Storembreak as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special…was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love of this character has meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable. Next up, Doomsday!”
My Thoughts
It feels like everybody’s reaction to seeing this was pretty much the same, of everybody questioning Thor’s future in the MCU. A lot of us thought that this meant Thor dies in Doomsday or Secret Wars. As I was writing this, I checked his Instagram account and noticed that he took it off. I don’t know what that means but it could mean that Marvel saw the internet speculating what it means and asked him to take it down. I don’t know if that’s the case but given how secretive Marvel is about this and how big of a spoiler this could be if it’s true, it would make sense.
Even before this Hemsworth’s post I thought there would be a good chance that Thor does in either Doomsday or Secret Wars. Next year will be 15 years since Thor came out, that’s a long time to be playing a character. He’s been in the MCU longer than Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans were. I figured we’d see the last of Thor in one of those films, it would make sense given the amount of time he’s been playing the characters AND it’s an Avengers movie, somebody always dies and it would make sense that it would be Thor. I’m assuming that Doomsday is another Infinity War situation where it ends on a cliffhanger. Maybe the cliffhanger is Thor’s death and establishing stakes for Secret Wars. The other thing is om Hiddleston is coming back. I don’t know what it would be, but maybe there’s something to do with Thor’s death that has emotional weight when you have Loki there. I don’t know if you kill Loki because that’ll be a rehash for multiple MCU films, but there could be something there. I feel like if you do have Thor die in these films you want Loki there and to be with Thor in his final moments.
The other thing I’ll say, if Thor actually does die in Doomsday or Secret Wars, I’m glad it’s in an Avenger film and not Thor 5. There’s been rumors and speculation about a Thor 5 happening with a new director. Love and Thunder really burnt me on the character and the idea of another Thor film. Like I said, I think killing Thor will be more satisfying in an Avengers film than a Thor film. We don’t know if Thor is actually going to die or not, but I think Hemsworth’s message does indicate that there’s something major happening with Thor. Maybe that means that we’re saying goodbye to our other Avengers like Hulk and Hawkeye and you really and properly close out the original Avengers in these films.
Final Thoughts: We really don’t know anything about Doomsday and the plot of it. Even with Hemsworth’s message it’s not super useful because I don’t know what this movie is going to be. I don’t know how big of a role Thor will have in the film. I’d assume he’ll have a large role, but if he’s the main character or not, I’m not really sure. I don’t know how insightful or interesting this was, I just wanted to talk about this and share my perspective about it. It’s also Marvel so I just like to talk about it.
