Spider-Man News! Spider-Man 4 + Beyond the Spiderverse Updates!

CinemaCon is happening this week and a couple days ago Sony had their panel where they talked about their upcoming movies. Naturally they talked a lot about Spider-Man both Tom Holland’s fourth film and Beyond the Spiderverse. What do I think about it? Am I more excited for these movies or nervous? Let’s talk about it!

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4

The first thing I wanted to talk about was the updates on Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie. I wish there was more to talk about. I was hoping we’d get a cast and a story. We know that Sadie Sink from Stranger Things is in the movie and Zendaya is coming back in some sort of role. We don’t know the villain, the plot, or anything like that. But the director, Destin Daniel Cretton was out on stage and revealed the title for the movie and that they’re going to start filming this summer. Our title for the movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. They’re abondeding “home” from the title. If this starts a new trilogy maybe “day” will appear in the title. It’s making it very clear that after the events of No Way Home that they’re starting over and this is a new adventure for Spider-Man. What’s cool about the title is that both the font and style is very different from the previous titles for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies. Clearly just by the title they’re teasing that this is really something different from the past trilogy of movies. With the font looking more like classic Spider-Man I hope this means that they’re leaning into a more classic and traditional take on Spider-Man. That’s what I would want and I know other Spider-Man fans want a street level, grounded take on the character. Have him be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man not the Spider-Man that’s in Washington D.C., Europe, space, and the multiverse. This is probably my most anticipated comic book movie of next year. I’m not sure about in general but when I make my most anticipated list this one will most certainly be top five, maybe even top three.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spiderverse

It was very exciting that we actually got updates on this project. If you haven’t been following the production of the movie it’s been a bit of a madhouse. Pretty soon after Across the Spiderverse released reports came out talking about how the animators barely got the movie finished due to the stylized animation and all sorts of stuff like that. 100 animators quit the production due to the overly long hours they were having to work. This was weeks after Across the Spiderverse came out. They delayed Beyond the Spiderverse indefinitely, which means it was delayed but with no release date. Reports came out last year that maybe the movie got erased due to creative differences. The directors and composer clarified that nothing got scrapped, the production is going fine. Sounds like there’s some drama between the two leads of this franchise. There has sort of been a long stretch of reports about this movie’s production. The fact that the creative team was out on stage for this movie we got some information, first looks, a release date, and the people at CinemaCon actually saw footage from the movie.

This is very reassuring that this movie is coming out, we do have to wait till June 2027. Given the quality of these movies, I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait. This movie is confirmed to be the final movie in this franchise. It is a trilogy that started with Into the Spiderverse and it’ll end with Beyond the Spiderverse. It’s being described as a massive finale to the trilogy and will break boundaries in terms of animation. The specific details they said about the movie are not super exciting. I feel the stuff they said about being a massive finale to the trilogy and breaking animation boundaries is stuff that we could have expected. I figured this movie would have those elements, it’s nice to hear it but it’s not shocking information on the one hand.

Final Thoughts: In general, it’s always nice to hear news and updates on movies that you’re anticipating. I was hoping the specific information we got on these movies was a bit more exciting. The day that I’m writing this we haven’t gotten the WB, Universal, or Disney panel. I’m hoping there we’ll get more exciting information. But I’m happy that we got the title, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It makes the movie feel a bit more official and like it’s actually happening. After the troubled production of Beyond the Spiderverse, I'm happy that we have a release date that’s sooner than I thought it would be.
