Why Did The Flash Bomb? Andy Muschietti’s Thoughts!
The Flash is one of the biggest box office bombs of the decade, the genre, and of all time. Everybody knows the main reasons as to why that movie bombed…except for one person. The director of The Flash, Andy Muschietti shared his thoughts as to why The Flash bombed. Simply put, they’re stupid. Let’s talk about it!

My Thoughts
- “Among all the other reasons, because it wasn’t a movie that appealed to all four quadrants. It failed at that. When you spend $200 million making a movie, Warner Brothers wants to bring even your grandmother to the theater. I’ve found in private conversations that a lot of people just don't know about the Flash as a character. Particularly the two female quadrants. All of that is just the wind hoping against the film I’ve learned,” said Muschietti. This is the quote that Muschietti gave during the interview. Quite frankly, this is the stupidest and dumbest reason that I’ve heard. Did this fail miserably at the box office? Yes it did. Was it because women didn’t show up? No, it’s not.
- If you don’t know what the four quadrants that he refers to are. Basically, it’s something used to describe who a movie is made for. It’s a movie that needs to appeal to both men and women, over and under the age of 25. Muschietti is saying that men showed up and they paid money to watch the movie. But the women either over or under 25, didn’t show up. When I saw this quote, I thought this was so stupid and idiotic of him to think that. I posted ScreenRant’s Instagram post about this topic on my Instagram story. A friend of mine responded to my story and SHE agreed it was idiotic. She loves The Flash as a character. She even listed reasons why the movie bombed, it wasn’t good and the Ezra Miller controversies. Those are some of the big reasons as to why the movie bombed. Everybody knows the reasons as to why The Flash bombed, it’s not a secret or hard to figure out why. 2023 wasn’t a great year for movies at the box office. I talked a whole lot about why The Flash bombed, that such a big topic of conversation the summer of 2023. More so than any of the movies they released. Everybody was talking about why The Flash bombed so badly. I read this quote from Muschietti, and thought this guy needs to go outside and touch grass. It feels like he was living under a rock when this movie came out. And emerged from hiding a few days back and then started giving his reasons as to why it bombed. It also feels like he’s disappointed with the way the movie was received. Granted, I would be too. No director wants their movie to bomb at the box office or to not get good reviews. These quotes feel like he’s unable to see why this movie bombed. He’s not blaming himself or the studio, he’s blaming the audience. The audience didn’t show up because you made a disappointing movie, the DCEU was dying, and WB didn’t handle the Ezra Miller situation really well. Those are the reasons why The Flash bombed, not because girls didn’t show up.
- The second part of the quote is equally stupid he says that people don't care about The Flash as a character. I think it is better to phrase this, people don’t care about Ezra Miller’s Flash. The Flash in general is one of DC’s most iconic superheroes. You ask anybody to name a character that runs super fast, The Flash is one of the first people they think of. Not to mention, when this movie was in production. There was a very popular Flash tv show on The CW. It was such a popular show for The CW and people love that show. There’s absolutely fans of that show. People love Grant Gustin as the character and for my generation he will be The Flash of our childhood. Grant Gustin and the entire cast are super popular. I went to a comic con back in 2018 and Candice Patton (Iris), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlyn), Tom Cavanagh (Wells), and Hartley Sawyer (Ralph) were all there. All of them had big crowds of people surrounding them wanting to get pictures and autographs. People love The Flash as a character and tv show. You can go onto social media and see girls that are in love with Grant Gustin. The Flash is in all sorts of forms of media. Movies, tv shows, comic books, and he’s appeared in several animated tv shows and movies of the years. The Flash is an insanely popular character, people love and care about The Flash. They don’t care about Ezra Miller’s version of The Flash.
- As you can tell, I find Andy Muschietti’s comments here are stupid. This isn’t the first time he’s made comments about The Flash when it came out about defending the CGI. He seems so out of touch with the rest of the world that it becomes annoying. Right now, he’s attached to direct Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the coming months it’s announced that he’s no longer directing. If he keeps on saying all of this weird stuff about The Flash, I wouldn’t blame James Gunn if he doesn’t want to work with him.
