Ryan Gosling Joining Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie? 

A few days back we got a report with an update about Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling being in talks to star in the movie. What do I think of this? Do I want Ryan Gosling to join Star Wars? Let’s get started!

My Thoughts

• One thing to keep in mind, this isn’t confirmed. This isn’t an official announcement that Gosling is in the movie. This report is coming from The Hollywood Reporter. When they put something out like this, there’s good reason to believe that this could be a thing. There’s a lot of rumors that are spread on the internet in regards to stuff like this. If The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, or Deadline release something like this, I believe that it’ll happen. 

• This kind of shocked me when I saw a post about this on Instagram. I’m a fan of Ryan Gosling, he’s been in some great movies. I never thought that we’d see him join Star Wars. You look at his career and it wasn’t obvious that he was a guy that would join Star Wars. In the 2020s, it seems like his career is going a bit more mainstream. In the 2010s, he established himself as a great actor with a lot of variety. He was in several Best Picture nominees, he got multiple Oscar nominations, and he worked with a lot of top level talent. He was being bold with some of his choices that he picked. Four movies that he did in a row, The Nice Guys, La La Land, Blade Runner 2049, and First Man. All very different movies, but showed that he has a lot of range. In the 2020s, he’s very clearly gone in a more mainstream route. He worked with The Russo Brothers on The Gray Man. Of course, Barbie came out and was in one of the most talked about movie scenes of 2023. The Fall Guy was a great blockbuster from last year. It’s the movie that everybody says did not deserve to bomb in 2024. Maybe there’s a sense in which he’s going mainstream, so he joins an A-list franchise. But even the mainstream projects he’s done aren't franchise films. If he’s interested in whatever Shawn Levy’s script for this movie is and he wants to do it, then I’m in. He can be fun and charming, he can also be serious. He’s a very versatile actor, I’m excited if he actually does join this movie. The report doesn’t talk about his role in the movie. I would assume it’ll be a lead role, will he be the main character? I don’t know. If you’re getting somebody like Gosling, he’s going to be a lead in the movie. It sounds like this movie is totally disconnected from The Skywalker Saga. There’s really no point in speculating who he’ll be playing. 

• I did just say that I think he’s very versatile in his movies. He’s shown that he can do a lot of different things. But from the roles that I’ve seen him in, I don’t immediately see what his Star Wars character would look like. When they announced that Jude Law was going to be in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, I had a good idea as to what his character would be like. The version that we saw in the show is very similar to what I pictured. When I think of his performances in First Man or Barbie, I don’t see Star Wars. I’m not trying to contradict what I just said, but I don’t immediately see what his Star Wars character will look like. 

• This is a movie that I’ve always been excited for. I’m a big fan of Shawn Levy, he’s done a lot of great movies. He’s sort of underrated with just how many projects he’s been a part of. Of course, Deadpool & Wolverine came out last year and that’s his big hit film. He’s worked the other attractive Ryan in Hollywood a number of times on Free Guy and The Adam Project, both movies got great reviews. 20 years ago he did Night at the Museum, a solid franchise that were all hit films. He’s also one of the main producers on Stranger Things, he’s partly responsible for the most popular show of the last 10 years. He also produced Arrival which got a Best Picture nomination. When you take a director I like and an actor I like and put them in a fun world like Star Wars, you get something that I’m very interested in.
