The Batman: Part II Delayed to 2027! What Happened?

Comic book and Batman fans got some sad news yesterday! The Batman: Part II was delayed to 2027. This is unfortunate considering so many people are excited for this movie. What do I think of the news? What does this mean for the quality of the movie? Let’s get started!

My Thoughts

  • The Batman was my most anticipated movie of 2022 and it was my favorite movie of 2022. I’ve been very very very excited for this movie ever since it was announced. In early 2023, it was given a release date. With the confirmation that Matt Reeves was returning to write and direct the movie. Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz were confirmed to return for the movie. It’s been almost two years since that announcement and there’s been a couple of delays to the movie. Its original release date was October 2025 and it was supposed to start shooting in 2024. But because of the strikes in 2023, Matt Reeves couldn’t finish the script because of it. They delayed the movie from 2025 to 2026, fair enough. Then yesterday it was reported that the movie was delayed from October 2026 to October 2027. There’s not much detail given as to why this movie delayed happened. But it’s not too surprising that this movie did get delayed.
  • There’s been a number of quotes from Matt Reeves and James Gunn that indicate that the script is in various levels of completion. When promoting The Penguin, Reeves said that the first draft was finished. A few weeks back, James Gunn said some quotes that indicated that maybe the script wasn’t finished. Once we heard all of that, a lot of people started to wonder if the movie was going to get pushed back. The news of this actually getting delayed wasn’t too surprising, it was just disappointing that it was true. What’s kind of frustrating about this movie is that the first movie came out in March 2022. If this movie keeps its October 2027 release date. It would be 5 ½ years between the movies. For a comic book movie, that’s a pretty big gap between movies. Most comic book movies probably have a three year around. Anything over four years is a bit weird for a comic book movie. Robert Pattinson is going to be in his early-40s by the time this movie comes out. He could be pushing 50 by the time the third movie comes out. It’s frustrating that we aren’t getting this movie sooner. But sometimes this stuff happens and it’s out of their control.
  • There’s a couple of things that could indicate why this movie is getting delayed. First up, Matt Reeves said some recent quotes that said that he and the co-writer were still finishing up the script. They planned on filming in Summer 2025. But, Robert Pattinson already signed on to Christopher Nolan’s next movie. It's supposed to start filming next summer. There’s only one Robert Pattinson. If the script and production for Nolan’s movie is ready to go, then he’ll work on that. But with the script for The Batman: Part II not being finished, that filming date could change. With The Batman: Part II getting delayed. This movie might not start filming until 2026 probably around the time when Christopher Nolan’s next movie releases. That’s one thing to keep in mind with this movie’s delay.
  • Another thing that has to be mentioned there’s speculation that the reason why the script is taking so long to finish is because they want to integrate Robert Pattinson into James Gunn’s DCU. When James Gunn announced his DCU, he said Batman: The Brave and the Bold was going to be their Batman movie. It was going to have Robin in there and focus on the Bat-family. Shortly after that, Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash was hired to direct the movie. Ever since then, there’s been no announcements or updates about that movie. The updates we’ve been getting about The Batman: Part II is that the script isn’t finished. I would not be surprised if in 2025 they announce that Robert Pattinson’s Batman is canon to the DCU. Matt Reeves might have changed the script a bit to make sure it fits in with James Gunn’s plans. That has not been confirmed, but it is something to keep in mind and it’s been heavily rumored. Even recently, Muschietti said that his Batman movie was delayed a bit and he might shoot something else before that movie. Then a couple days later, The Batman: Part II was delayed. I hope they don’t integrate Robert Pattinson’s Batman into James Gunn’s DCU. I love the tone that Matt Reeves set for his Batman. It’s a dark and vicious Batman that took inspiration from David Fincher’s movies, mainly Se7en. You watch the trailer for Superman and the tone doesn’t feel like it’ll fit with Robert Pattinon’s Batman. I think it’s ok that there’s Elseworlds projects out there. That’s one of the things that James Gunn talked about back in January 2023. He said that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Robert Pattinson’s Batman are DC Elseworlds. They’re still being made, but they aren’t a part of his DCU. I hope that we DON’T get the announcement that Robert Pattinson will team up with David Cornswet’s Superman. I want Matt Reeves to build out a Batman cinematic universe, not incorporate Matt Reeves’ Batman into a DC Cinematic Universe.
