Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland did an interview a couple days ago where he gave updates on Spider-Man 4. We’ve gotten several updates on this movie, not many of them being from Holland himself. What did he say? Does it provide promising updates on the movie?
What We Know?: Ever since No Way Home came out, Sony and Marvel have been working on a fourth Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland. Back in September, it was reported that Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings would be directing the film. I believe the writers of the past trilogy are returning to write this movie. There’s been rumors about the plot of the film, but there’s still a lot we don’t know. We’ve heard rumors that maybe it’s another multiverse story with Maguire and Garfield coming back. With Venom: The Last Dance, people are wondering if that movie is going to lead into this movie. We don’t know the plot, we could learn more about the plot once we see Venom: The Last Dance.
The Interview
- Tom Holland went on a podcast and was asked about the movie, to which he said this. “One of the things is that, with Marvel, your film is a small cog in a large machine. That machine has got to keep running. You have to make sure you can fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture. That’s one of the challenges we are facing. The time in which we need to get that done is a tall order but definitely achievable with the people we have working on it now.” This quote isn’t necessarily surprising, what he said is what a lot of fans have been feeling with the recent MCU. The MCU and Marvel Studios is a big machine that’s operating constantly. You need pieces in the machine to make it flow and work right. Based on this quote, it sounds like the problem they’re facing is how this movie fits into the MCU’s brand. Especially with these Spider-Man movies it’s tricky because it’s also a Sony movie. There’s deals that need to be cut so Tom Holland can appear in MCU movies. But MCU characters might have to appear in the movies, that was the deal with this past trilogy of Holland’s movies. I don’t know if that deal remains the same this time around. Holland, also said this.
- “We have creativity and we have a pitch and a draft, which is excellent. It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.” Another thing that he said here, he read a script but it needs work. I saw some people responding to this being concerned about the film’s quality. When the lead actor says “it needs work”, people get nervous. When he says “it needs work”, I take that to mean it needs work figuring out how to connect it to the MCU. How does this movie connect with whatever the MCU’s plans are for Doomsday and Secret Wars?
- I hear Holland’s quotes and my takeaway is they want to make sure they do this right. No Way Home was obviously such a massive critical and box office hit, that if they do a fourth film they want it to feel right and not just cranking out a movie for the sake of making money. I respect and appreciate that. Both Kevin Feige (President of the MCU) and Amy Pascal (President of Sony) know that a fourth film will make them both a lot of money. This is almost guaranteed to make them another $1 billion. They easily could have cranked this movie out given it a 2024 release date and put out because they know it’s going to be a big money maker. They haven’t even started filming yet, based on rumors that it could start early 2025, aiming for a 2026 release date. That would be five years since No Way Home came out, they want to make sure it’s right. I can 100% respect that, I’m glad they’re taking their time. I wouldn’t be surprised if either late this year or early next year we get casting for the movie. Maybe it’s announced that Tom Hardy is Venom in the movie or Jon Favreau is returning. I’m not sure, but I think we’re getting to the point where within the coming months we'll get either a release date, cast, or a title. Or maybe even all three of them.
