Alan Silvestri’s career as a film composer dates back to 1972 with The Doberman Gang. And in the year 2022, he’s a legendary film composer. So here are my picks for my 5 favorite Alan Silvestri film scores. Let’s get started!
5. The Avengers: This is such an important piece in the MCU and comic book movie genre as a whole. And the score here is really quite good, it’s a score that I wish got talked about more. And the main Avengers theme that played through-out all of these Avengers movies is very good, it’s memorable. When it starts, you know which movie theme that is. And when there are big exciting action sequences, the score captures those fun emotions that you would be feeling. When it needs to be more tamed and more human and grounded it can do that just as well. It’s a great score that is a great superhero score, that would also work outside of the MCU or the comic book movie genre.
4. Forrest Gump: Moving in a very different direction from The Avengers, we have the Oscar winning movie Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks. And this is a score that is truly iconic, it’s so sweet and does a great job of fitting into the tone and vibe of this movie. Silvestri wasn’t going for this big epic heroic sounding score. But a score that was filled with plenty of emotion that just fit the tone and vibe of what Robert Zemmeckis is going for. This movie will feel very out of place with the rest of the movies on this list, once you see the top 3 movies on this list. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great score that got nominated for an Oscar for a reason.
3. Captain America the First Avenger: I love the MCU as previously discussed in this blog post, and I just think this score is one of the best in the MCU. Maybe the best after another which we will talk about shortly. But the score has this old fashion sense to it, that feels like music that you’ll hear in a 1940s movie. And since the movie takes place in the 1940s that is very much meant as a positive. And when you have these big exciting action sequences, the music plays just right. And you get this truly unique score inside of the MCU, it’s not a score that is trying to be the biggest or the loudest score in the MCU. But what it’s going for, it does a great job of.
2. Avengers Endgame: This is very rare when Avengers Endgame isn’t listed at number 1. But that doesn’t change the fact that this score is just fantastic, it’s truly one of the great superhero movie scores of all time. Silvestri took all of the great works that he did for the previous MCU movies and put it into this movie. Where you get a little bit of Captain America but also get a little bit of Avengers in there (obviously). And when the portal sequence starts, the score for that scene is really great and puts a big smile on my face. And that’s what very few scores actually do, put a big smile on my face. And this one I have so many fun memories associated with it.
1. Back to the Future: For me, this is one that is another one of the great movie scores of all time. And as soon as it starts, you know instantly what it is. You know instantly what movie it’s from. And this score is just so timely, where on the one hand it feels very 1980s but in the year 2022 works just as well, it is just as effective and just as great. It just has this lightning in a bottle feel about it. This is a score that is ultimately time travel music, that whenever I think of a time travel movie…I think of this score. Because it’s a score that is timely and so lively that it is still one of the great movie scores, nearly 40 years later. So with some strong competition, Back to the Future is the best movie score by Alan Silvestri.
