Top 5 Favorite Tom Cruise Movies

Top 5 Favorite Tom Cruise Movies

This weekend, Top Gun: Maverick finally dropped in the theaters after multiple delays. So today I wanted to share my top 5 favorite Tom Cruise movies. Let’s get started!

HONORABLE MENTION:

  •  Jerry Maguire: This movie came out in an era where Tom Cruise was transitioning over to bring the “action movie star”. It came out the year as Mission Impossible, and from that movie he was more of a movie star. But back in the early stages of his career he was more of a dramatic actor, this movie being one of them. And I think this is just a great movie, of course Cuba Gooding Jr. just steals the show and Oscar well deserved in my mind. And he’s given one of the most iconic movie lines out there…you probably know which one it is. But I think that Tom Cruise gives one of his best performances where it’s more dramatic, but he still oozes that movie star charm that he always does. It has plenty of humor and heartfelt moments thrown in here, so overall it’s a great Tom Cruise movie.

5. Top Gun: Now this is one of the Tom Cruise movies that really established him as TOM CRUISE. And 36 years later, it’s still one of his best movies and one of his most iconic movies. And I rewatched this movie just this past weekend and it’s a great 1980s Tom Cruise vehicle. Where it has all of the things that you expect from an 80s movie, and it does all of it so well. Of course, the score and the soundtrack here are great. And “Danger Zone” is one of the catchiest and most memorable songs of the 1980s. And you have to talk about the cast, and everybody here is delivering great work. And it’s easy to forget how stacked the cast is because it’s so much known as a Tom Cruise movie. But Anthony Edwards is great at playing off of Tom Cruise, and his charm. You buy into the brotherly bond that they have. Val Kilmer as Iceman is some great casting, and shows how great of an actor he was. So all in all, easily a top tier Tom Cruise movie.

4. Edge of Tomorrow: This is one of those movies that I wish we got a sequel to. Because the movie was marketed horribly, it was marketed as a drama and not as fun as the movie actually is. And everybody that saw the movie loved it, but nobody went to go see it. And while the movie does repeat itself many many times through-out the movie, you never get tired of it. And you just like going on this adventure with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Speaking of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the duo between the two of them is great. They have great chemistry. And this is one of the early movies from Emily Blunt that really established her as a great actress. And with Tom Cruise, he’s playing against type he’s not an action hero at the start of this movie. He’s a coward, and that’s something different for Tom Cruise to play. So this is a great sci-fi action movie that more people need to check out.

3. Mission Impossible: Fallout: As previously mentioned in this post, I’m a big fan of the Mission Impossible franchise, and this is easily the best of the bunch. And it’s crazy that 6 movies into a 26 year old franchise is the best one, and the franchise has been on a hot streak for a while now. But you just get some fantastic action that is so large and epic in scale, and it’s so much fun to watch Tom Cruise do these crazy insane stunts. They do some great world building that ties the movies together, but it does all of it in a way that makes sense and feels conheriant. And just in general, this movie delivers everything that you want from a Mission Impossible movie, and in my opinion it delivers the best of all of them. So starting next May I believe, I will be reviewing all of the Mission Impossible movies leading up to the 7th one, excited about that one.

2. Top Gun: Maverick: This is a movie that when they first announced it, I was so confused as to why we were getting a sequel to Top Gun. Why was Top Gun getting a sequel, but with the trailers they started to win me over. And the early buzz for the movie was as good as it could be, I didn’t hear a single negative thing about this movie. Watched the movie, and it’s fantastic. It's such a crowd pleaser of a movie with so many big emotions in it. Whether it’s cheering at the screen, on the edge of your seat, or feeling sad it has everything that a modern day blockbuster needs to have. And my audience was having a blast watching this movie, and this is one of my favorite movies of the year. And easily, one of Tom Cruise’s best movies.

1. A Few Good Men: This is a movie that I watched for the first time during the pandemic, and it lived up to all of the hype that I’ve heard. Where this might be the greatest courtroom drama of all time, and it’s compelling. It’s one of those movies that keeps you invested through-out the movie, you are hooked on this story and this mystery. And you’re constantly wondering what is going to happen next, what are they going to learn next. But it’s also a movie that is a lot more fun and entertaining than you might think. There is a nice solid stream of jokes running through-out the movie, and you get Tom Cruise being fun and charming. Of course, Jack Nicholson just steals the show and gets one of the most iconic movie lines of all time. You almost certainly know which movie I’m talking about. So easily, this is my favorite of Tom Cruise’s movies, and it’s one that will be hard to bet.

There you have it, my 5 favorite Tom Cruise movies. What is a Tom Cruise movie I need to see? And what is your favorite Tom Cruise movie? Thanks for reading!
