The Adam Project Review

The Adam Project Review

I’m a bit late but I was finally able to check out the latest Ryan Reynolds movie, The Adam Project released on Netflix. How is this movie? Let’s get started with my thoughts!

WHERE TO WATCH: Netflix

RATED: PG-13 (Language)

The Good:

For me the best thing about this movie is the cast, everybody in here is doing a very good job with what they are given. Of course, Ryan Reynolds is very good in big action movie, you get plenty of Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds. And his relationship and chemistry with Walkter Scobell who plays the younger Ryan Renyolds is great, he’s great at being a young Ryan Reynolds and plays off of Ryan Reynolds so well and their dynamic is so much fun and ries a large portion of this movie forward. And one other thing about Ryan Reynolds in this movie, is you have him doing his name routine in movies. But he’s also much more heartfelt and dramatic then I’ve seen. I don’t know what to over sell this, I’m not saying he should be nominated for an Oscar, but it is a bit of a change of direction from what he normally does. Another stand-out here is Mark Ruffalo as the dad, and he’s a great actor that gets plenty of funny moments, especially playing off of Reynolds. But he’s also the actor that evokes the biggest emotions, he gets the most emotional scenes of the movie. And Ruffalo plays that very well in this movie. You also have Jennifer Garner as the mom, who is very solid as mother characters and another solid actor to throw into this movie.

It’s also a movie that is very entertaining, it has non stop stream of fun and exciting action sequences cut with lots of humor from everybody. And so it makes for a super entertaining and very rewatchable movie and easy to consume. I was never bored by the movie, there is also something happening and something taking place that keeps you invested through-out the movie.

Another thing here is that the action here is handled very well, you get plenty of sci-fi action taking place in this movie. Wether it’s chases with jets through canyons or Ryan Reynolds taking out henchman with a big staff weapon thingy. It’s all handled very well and shot very well in a way where you can see everything that is happening. And it’s hard to pick a favorite stand-out scene because every action scene is handled very well. And if you like cool sci-fi action this movie has plenty of it.

And possibly the big surprise of this movie is just how much heart this movie has. And the emotions just run all through-out the movie, they start very early on in this movie and don’t really let up until the end of the movie. Once Mark Ruffalo’s character gets introduced into the plot, is really when the emotions were the most present. Like I said before, Mark Ruffalo gets the most emotional and hearfelt scenes of the movie. He gets a scene at the end of the movie, if you’ve seen it you know what scene I’m talking about that really does pull at your heartstrings. The film has a lot of heart to it, something I wasn’t nessaericly expecting going into this movie.

Finally, time travel stories are very fun to watch and this is an example of that. It’s very entertaining with how it deals with the time travel side of things. And mixing a fun cast, a good script, and time travel you can get a very solid movie and that’s what this is.

The Bad:

And the big thing here is feels like Zoe Saldana’s character was dramatically underused, and used in a very weird way. Where around 45 minutes into the movie, she shows up and we learn about her relationship with Ryan Reynolds and she’s a main focus for about 10-15 minutes and then her character leaves the movie, and shows up a bit at the end. And it felt like you could have just taken out her character and the movie wouldn’t change all that much. And this movie was written about 10 years ago and was in development hell for about 8 years, at one point Tom Cruise was going to star in the movie. So this feels like a movie that was changed a lot in development hell, and that means that Zoe Saldana’s character was used very strangely in this movie. She’s great, I like her in the movie the way she was used felt odd to me.

Also, tied to that when Zoe Saladana’s character was on screen and you had Ryan Reynolds and young Ryan Reynolds with her, the movie did drag for me. It wasn’t as good or as exciting as other scenes and sequences were. And that sequence did feel a bit off with the rest fo the movie probably because the script was changed a good bit.

Final Thoughts: Overall, The Adam Project is a very good movie action adventure sci-movie with a great cast, and a great performance by all of the cast members. The humor really worked for me and it does have plenty of humor that really worked for me. I think there are some issues with the script here, and how Zoe Saldana’s character is used in this movie. But I really dug this movie!

The Score: 8.7/10 (B+)
