What Universe Does Morbius Take Place In?

What Universe Does Morbius Take Place In?

This week Morbius finally hits theaters. And one of the most talked about aspects of this movie is which Spider-Man universe does this movie take place in? So in today’s blog post I’m going to be talking about the easter eggs in the trailer and then sharing my final answer to the question. Let’s get started

NOTE: In this post I will be talking about rumors that have been circulating around the internet. But stuff that hasn’t been confirmed by Sony or Marvel. So if you are skeptical about this stuff, don’t read this blog post till after you see Morbius. And I will be talking about Spider-Man SPOILERS talking about the movies! This is your one and only warning.

  • Michael Keaton is Returning: When the first trailer dropped for this movie in January 2020, we watched it and it looked like a pretty generic superhero movie. Then we got to the end…and we saw that Michael Keaton is returning to the Marvel Universe. And one of the interesting things about this is they haven’t said if this is the MCU Vulture. So maybe this isn’t the MCU Vulture. Which maybe this is a variant of Vulture from a different universe. But I’m guessing this is the MCU Vulture which could make us lean into the fact that this movie could be in the MCU.

  • Oscorp Logo: Now they haven’t overtly mentioned Oscorp in any of the marketing for this movie. But in the skyline we see a shot of Oscorp, Oscorp connects to Norman Osborn who is a Spider-Man villain. And No Way Home confirmed that Oscorp isn’t a thing in the MCU. But we did get Oscorp in both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man universes. And the logo for this movie looks more like the Oscorp logo from the Andrew Garfield universes. So with this Oscorp tease, I think it’s more so Garfield then Maguire. One final detail is in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 you have Harry Osborn looking through old files and one of the files is labeled Morbius.

  • Daily Bugle Newspaper: The Daily Bugle and J. Jonah Jameson is one of the more iconic things within the Spider-Man world. And this is where it gets interesting, because the logo for The Daily Bugle on the newspaper looks like it from the Tobey Maguire movies. But it’s referencing The Rhino and Black Cat. The Rhino was a villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat was also in that movie played by Felicity Jones. And Black Cat didn’t appear because Felicia Hardy was a newbie to Oscorp.

  • Spider-Man Graffiti: In the first 2 trailers we saw a shot of Jared Leto running down an alleyway with some graffiti of Spider-Man written on the wall. And the words murderer written on them. Which means that Spider-Man in this universe has a dark side. Now the graffiti looks like Tobey Maguire Spider-Man. It has the white lines on the suit that neither Tom Holland or Andrew Garfield have on theirs. BUT, in No Way Home Andrew Garfield Spider-Man said that after Gwen’s death he hasn’t been holding back his punches, which implies he’s been a more vicious Spider-Man. Which “murderer” could come into play that way.

  • References to Venom: The second trailer for this movie was really the one that gave lots of teases to Tom Hardy’s Venom universe. Because Tyrese Gibson’s character says “we’ve never seen anything like this since that incident in San Francisco”. Venom: Let There Be Carnage takes place in San Francisco, so did the original movie. And then at the very end a man asks Jared Leto who are you? And Leto responds with “I am…Venom. Just kidding Dr. Michael Morbius at your service”. So very clearly this movie has connections to Venom, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Hardy makes a cameo in this movie.

The Final Verdict (My Prediction): So between Maguire, Garfield, and Holland which Spider-Man universe do I think this movie takes place in…I think it’s…ANDREW GARFIELD. Most of the evidence, most of the easter eggs are pointing towards Andrew Garfield. The Oscorp logo is very similar to the one in Garfield’s universe. It references established characters in that universe. And the graffiti I think points to Garfield’s universe most. Which may also mean that Hardy and Garfield might be in the same universe. Which Spider-Man universe do you think Morbius takes place in?
