Peacemaker Season 1 Review

Peacemaker Season 1 Review

The first season of Peacemaker has officially finished with all 8 of it’s episodes. So in today’s blog post I’m going to be sharing my thoughts on Peacemaker season 1. Let’s get started!

The Good:

For me the best thing about this season is this is just a super fun rated R superhero tv show that is so distinctly James Gunn with the writing and action. James Gunn has been in Hollywood for 20 years now and I think it’s safe to say that James Gunn has a unique style to the way that he does things. And if you like James Gunn’s style then this is the show for you. There is plenty of dark humor in this season that made me laugh. So I really do think that James Gunn was the best thing working for this season.

Speaking of the humor, all of it made me laugh, and in each episode there is one joke that made me laugh out loud. And every joke landed for me and everybody gets a joke that works. It’s not just one character that gets all of the jokes. Once again, these are James Gunn jokes, these aren’t family friendly jokes. Some of the jokes in the show are so incredibly offensive but it’s done in a way where it’s still funny. Some people aren’t going to find all of these jokes funny, but I like James Gunn’s sense of humor so it was funny to me.

Also, the characters here are a lot of fun and everybody has something about them that is unique. Peacemaker is this douchebag rated 4 version of Captain America that has this offensive and over the top sense of humor about him that is really funny. Vigilante is another fun character that is so weird and clingy to Peacemaker that he’s also kind of charming at the same time. I sure hope that we get more of Vigilante in the DCEU because he was a nice new addition. But like I said, all of the characters here are a lot of fun and bring something new to the table. So this was a great ensemble of characters.

Another reason why the characters work so well is because they got a fun set of actors to play these characters. John Cena is Peacemaker seems like lightning in a bottle type casting, I mean it’s so hard to find somebody who can be equally as good and memorable as Peacemaker as John Cena. I’m excited we are getting a season 2 because we got more of John Cena as Peacemaker. I thought that Chukwudi Iwuji was really good as Murn, the leader of the group who was one of the more straight faced characters on the show. But still really good, excited to see him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023. Freddie Stroma was great at playing Vigilante, and once again I hope we see a lot more of this character.

And this show is surprisingly a lot more emotional and heartfelt, more heartfelt than I thought it would be. The emotional arc that they give Peacemaker through-out the show really really worked for me. In episode 1 he’s a guy that is so obnoxious and only cares about himself until episode 8 where he’s a guy that cares for the people around him and wants to do the right thing. Even some moments in the finale really did work for me because of how heartfelt and emotional they were.

Finally, this show might have the best opening credits sequence in any show ever. I don’t get why HBO Max has the “skip” button available for this show because it’s great. And I have watched the show many, many times.

The Bad:

And honestly, I really don’t have any big issues with this show. But if I had to say something in the finale you have one of the butterflies lecturing Peacemaker about today’s society and that was uncalled for. The moment makes sense, why she was doing it makes sense. But the way it was done wasn’t the best for me. But honestly, that’s really the only thing I could think of.

Final Thoughts: I was so pleasantly surprised by Peacemaker. I wasn’t really sure what to expect going in but what I got was not that at all. It was a great rated R superhero show with James Gunn’s rated R style about it. The cast, characters, humor, heartfelt moments, and opening credits all worked for me. So this is one of the best things the DCEU has ever done. It’s pretty great!
