Marvel vs DC Movie Bracket

Marvel vs DC Movie Bracket

In the year 2022 we are in the prime of the comic book movie genre. Each and every year a handful of comic book movies come out in theaters. And if you know me, then you know that I’m a pretty big fan of the comic book movie genre. So in today’s blog post I’m taking the 8 highest rated Marvel movies on Rotten Tomatoes vs the 8 highest rated DC movies on Rotten Tomatoes, and created a movie bracket. Let’s get started

TEAM 1:

Round 1:

  • Spider-Man Into the Spider Verse vs The Dark Knight: This is an interesting one because both of these movies are important to the comic book movie genre, but in very different ways. With Into the Spider Verse you have this uniquely animated movie that isn’t like anything in the genre. We get Spider-Pig and Spider-Man Noir thrown into the mix. But it’s a movie that has a lot of heart to it. With The Dark Knight you have one of the celebrated comic book movies of all time. It gave us the legendary performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker. Christopher Nolan took more inspiration from crime thrillers than comic book movies. As for me, I’m pretty safely going with THE DARK KNIGHT. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time, and I’ve watched that movie so many times. Into the Spider Verse is very good, but I’ve never loved that movie the way other people have. So The Dark Knight movies on.

  • Black Panther vs Superman the Movie (1978): This is an interesting one because both of these movies are important for very different reasons. Black Panther was the first comic book movie to get nominated for Best Picture. It was the highest grossing stand alone superhero movie till Spider-Man: No Way Home came out. But Superman the Movie is the movie that basically created the comic book movie genre. It just came out and made such a big impression that it started the most successful movie genre of all time. So which one am I going with, and these are 2 different movies but I’m going to go with SUPERMAN THE MOVIE I actually just watched this movie for the first time back in January and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was a great telling of the Superman character. And I appreciated that it came out when the comic book genre was a lot more hopeful and not as dark as other comic book movies.

  • Avengers Endgame vs Wonder Woman: If you know me, then you know which movie I’m going to pick. And I’m just going to say it..I’m going with AVENGERS ENDGAME. It is a true superhero epic that was a satisfying end to The Infinity Saga. Very few franchises have landed the ship as well as this movie has. I had so much anticipation going into this movie, and it lived up to the hype. Wonder Woman on the other hand is a great DCEU movie with a great lead character with Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot is great as the character. And she has great chemistry with Chris Pine in the movie. It has things to say, themes that it explores throughout the movie. And the music for the movie is pretty fantastic. I do think the third act of the movie is the weakest part of the movie. It's a disappointing finale especially when you have Wonder Woman going up against Ares, it should be much better than it actually is. So while I really do enjoy Wonder Woman. Avengers Endgame gets my vote

  • Iron Man vs The Suicide Squad: These two movies are pretty opposite with it’s tone and the way it does things. With Iron Man you have the movie that started it all for the MCU, if this movie wasn’t as successful or as good as it was the MCU might not have been the most successful movie franchise. It has such lighting in a bottle type casting with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. And it is just a really fun blockbuster movie that I have always really really enjoyed. And then you have The Suicide Squad, a rated R comic book movie directed by the great James Gunn. If you saw my review for this movie, it’s placed in a number of my rankings. You know that I loved this movie, and loved going on this adventure with these great sets of crazy characters. I was never bored by the movie, it’s one of the most entertaining comic book movies out there. And as much as I love Iron Man, it's such an important movie. My vote goes to THE SUICIDE SQUAD. Both are great, if you were to say Iron Man I would agree with you.

Round 2:

  • The Dark Knight vs Superman the Movie: Possibly the two most beloved DC movies out there. And once again, these are movies that are important for two very different reasons. Like I said earlier, Superman the Movie is the movie that invented the comic book movie genre. It’s a classic telling of Superman with a more light hearted nature and tone to the way that it is done. But The Dark Knight might be the most celebrated DC movie of all time, everybody that has seen it either likes it or loves it. I haven’t met that one person that doesn’t like The Dark Knight. It gave us Heath Ledger’s absolutely legendary performance as The Joker. And him winning Best Supporting Actor was the first time an actor won an Oscar for a comic book movie. It’s also the first superhero movie to make $1 billion at the box office. As for me, I’m going to go with THE DARK KNIGHT. It's a movie that means more to me than Superman the Movie does, and that is not a knock on that movie. I’ve seen The Dark Knight 10+ times and Superman the Movie only 1 time.

  • Avengers Endgame vs The Suicide Squad: I know which one I’m going with…and that would be AVENGERS ENDGAME. But honestly, I love The Suicide Squad, it was a top 3 favorite movie of 2021 for me. And if it was going up against almost any other movie, I would have one. Because I just think that James Gunn worked his magic with creating an R rated comic book movie that is entertaining and heartfelt. For me, it was one of the most well rounded movies of 2021. And I absolutely loved it. I know this isn’t a movie but even the Peacemaker TV show is very very good. But with Avengers Endgame it’s a movie that paid off 11 years and 21 movies of build up. And it’s a movie that is so satisfying and emotional but also delivers amazing fan service that literally made my theater scream, clap, and shout. Very few franchises have successfully pulled off an epic conclusion, not even Star Wars could do that. So it does break my heart that The Suicide Squad has to leave, but I’m going with Avengers Endgame.

Round 3:

  • The Dark Knight vs Avengers Endgame: Oh man…this is like the hardest one on this entire bracket showdown. These are like my 2 favorite comic book movies of all time…which one am I going to go with as the winner from Team 1…this is really tough. Because both of these movies are fantastic for 2 totally different reasons. And it’s really tough for me to decide but I’m going with…Avengers Endgame, but like I said if I decided to go with The Dark Knight, I wouldn’t have been made. Because both of those movies are absolutely fantastic. But, only one can move on and that is Avengers Endgame for me. Honestly, if I was to do this again in a year or so I might pick The Dark Knight.

THE WINNER: Avengers Endgame

Team 2:

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home vs Teen Titans GO! To the Movies: This is another super easy one for me and I’m sure you can guess which one I’m going with. I’m easily going with SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME. It was a movie that delivered some of the best fan service of all time. I know this movie has gone on to make roughly $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. And it’s a movie that had my theater clapping, cheering, and screaming through-out the entire movie. When the movie started everybody was cheering when the villains came back everybody was cheering. Everybody was having the experience that the movie promised through the trailers. As for Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, it’s a very enjoyable and watchable DC animated movie. It’s a movie that has no shortage of energy but it’s also a movie that isn’t the most memorable or exciting for DC movies. So while it’s good, it’s not on the same level as other movies in this bracket showdown are.

  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings vs Shazam!: This is another round where neither one of these movies are in that top tier spot in the rankings of Marvel and DC movies. But both of them are very good and very entertaining. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was maybe the most surprising MCU movie of 2021, because the trailers didn’t do a great job of selling this movie in my opinion. But the movie that we got was a very entertaining and different MCU movie. It blends fantasy elements with martial arts, something that hasn’t been done in the MCU before. It’s all done with a lot of creativity from the director. With Shazam! you get a superhero version of Big where Zachary Levi is just perfectly cast as this man child that is Shazam! And it is one of the more heartfelt movies on this entire list with the foster family evokes a lot more emotion than I was expecting going in. As for me, I think I’m going to go with SHAZAM! It's a movie that really does work on almost every level it is going for.

  • Thor Ragnarok vs The LEGO Batman Movie: These are two of the most entertaining movies on this entire list going up against each other. Thor Ragnarok is quite possibly the funniest movie inside of the MCU. The rate per minute that jokes are dropping in this movie is insane, they are going for everything. And they use their greatest asset in the Thor franchise in this movie which is Chris Hemsworth who is a really funny guy and he brings all of his humor to the movie. Taika Waititi also gave this movie a big injection of red bull to the heart and gave it lots of energy. But with The LEGO Batman Movie it’s one of the most creative movies on this entire list, where they tell a really heartfelt Batman movie that you couldn’t really tell in a live action movie. Once again, it is never boring, it never really slows down for me. So if I was to judge this based on entertainment…I don’t know which one would be higher. But overall, I think I’m going to go with THOR RAGNAROK. It’s the MCU, I love the MCU so it does move on.

  • Spider-Man 2 vs The Dark Knight Rises: Now I think I know which movie the internet would go with here. One of these is widely regarded as the best superhero movie from that particular superhero. And the other one is one of the most polarizing films from the other superheroes. Spider-Man 2 is a beloved comic book movie that so many people think is the greatest Spider-Man movie of all time. It does a great job of being a campaign piece to the original movie. The Dark Knight Rises is such an epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. I think that Tom Hardy gives a great performance as Bane in that movie. And it’s my 2nd favorite of that trilogy, just beating out Batman Begins. But as for me, I’m pretty safely going with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. If you saw my review of Spider-Man 2 and the placement of that movie in my Spider-Man movie ranking, you know that I’m not as high on this movie as other people are. And I’m kind of confused where all of the love for this movie goes. So safely Batman beats out Spider-Man

Round 2:

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home vs Shazam!: On scope, scale, and size these movies are like on polar opposites of each other. And…I’m thinking you know which movie I’m going with. It’s SHAZAM!...just kidding, it's SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME like I said before, it’s one of the most epic comic book movies out there. It’s a movie that delivers some epic fan service that was so earned and so satisfying. And just the conclusion to this movie is so satisfying and feels like a complete arc for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Shazam! is a very good movie that is so entertaining, and I really do want that movie to move on as well. But it can’t…so Tom Holland beats out Zachary Levi.

  • Thor Ragnarok vs The Dark Knight Rises: This is a hard one because both of these movies are like equal to each other, I would give them around the same score as each other. So honestly, this is one of the toughest ones because I frankly thoroughly enjoy both of these movies a good bit. One is more entertaining and the other one is a better made movie. Honestly, I think I’m going to go with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Maybe with The Batman coming out just around the corner I’m in a bit of a Batman mood. So that is the one that I’m going to go with. But honestly, Thor Ragnarok is a great MCU movie.

Round 3:

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home vs The Dark Knight Rises: Which one of these movies is going to be the winner from team 2 and go up against Avengers Endgame. The last time a Batman movie went up against a Spider-Man movie, Batman won. And this time…is Spider-Man going to beat Batman or is Batman going to beat Spider-Man once again. And this time Spider-Man is beating Batman because I’m going with SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME. This was my favorite movie of last year, it’s a truly epic comic book movie that works on all of the different levels it was going for. I’ve seen it a couple of times and every single time it delivers great action and lots of excitement. And The Dark Knight Rises is an epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. But I do think that it is a movie that has more issues than No Way Home. So No Way Home does move on.

THE WINNER: Spider-Man: No Way Home

Final Showdown:

  • Avengers Endgame vs Spider-Man: No Way Home: Now these might be the two most epic movies on this entire list. One of them paid off 21 movies worth of build up spanning 11 years. And the other one is a celebration of 3 generations of Spider-Man movies. Both deliver incredible fan service that was earned and felt right. Both are two of the best theater experiences of all time for me. So which one comes on top, and I gotta go with AVENGERS ENDGAME. It just means more to me, I’ve watched more times. Granted, Spider-Man came out 2 months ago and Endgame came out nearly 3 years ago. And Endgame just has meant way too much to me to not pick that one. No Way Home is fantastic, I love that movie. But as for me, Avengers Endgame is the best superhero movie in this bracket showdown.

There you have it, a Marvel vs DC bracket shadow. Who do you think should have won? Also, what other bracket showdowns would you like to see me do? Thanks for reading!
