Top 10 Favorite Movie Duos

Top 10 Favorite Movie Duos

One of the most important parts of a movie are the characters, and with certain characters come great movie duos. Today, I’m sharing my 10 favorite movie duos of all time. This was actually a really difficult top 10 list to make because there are some fantastic movie duos out there and only picking 10 duos was really tough.

10. R2-D2 and C-3P0 (Star Wars Franchise): This duo doesn’t have an arc that they go through but they are just a fun duo that adds some nice humor to certain scenes. C-3P0 as a confused and annoying robot can make for some funny moments when other characters are annoyed by him. And R2-D2 is along for the ride and the sounds that he makes are iconic and memorable. So once again, they don’t really have a whole lot of plot to the Skywalker Saga, but I think they are a nice addition to the movies, and it wouldn’t be Star Wars without these iconic characters. It’s interesting because Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker, the people who are inside the robot suits for the characters, don’t like each other in real life so it’s interesting to see them as these characters that are best friends. A fun duo that are always great to see on screen.

9. Kirk and Spock (Reboot Star Trek Trilogy): I haven’t really talked about Star Trek a whole lot on my blog, but I'm a big fan of the Chris Pine lead Star Trek trilogy. It has fun action, great visuals, and fantastic score. But I think that the relationship between Kirk and Spock is one of the best things to come out of the trilogy. Kirk is the more wise cracking character that makes jokes a lot, and Spock is the opposite. Spock is straight faced and doesn’t really understand Kirk’s humor and it provides some really funny moments between the two characters. And it’s cool to see their arc move forward, at the beginning of Star Trek (2009) they are opposites and they don’t like each other. But you feel Spock’s sadness and worry for his friend when the events of Star Trek: Into Darkness happened. Of course, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have amazing chemistry and they help with making them a great movie duo.

8. Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling (The Silence of the Lambs): I watched Silence of the Lambs for the first time in 2020, and I loved the movie and it became one of my favorite movies of all time. One of the great aspects about the movie is the relationship between Hannibal and Clairce. They have this odd relationship where Hannibal Lecter loves Clairce and I don’t know how else to describe that. And Clairce isn’t all that scared of Lecter so their dynamic is so interesting. And given that Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are great talents they can play off of each other really well and they have a nice chemistry with one another. I’m curious to see where their relationship goes with the sequels and how it progresses. Maybe one day I’ll rank the 5 Hannibal Lecter movies and find out. But in general, I thought their dynamic was one of the more under-appreciated aspects of The Silence of the Lambs.

7. Han Solo and Chewbacca (Star Wars Franchise): I’m probably going to have some people (and by some people I mean my dad), commenting on my blog post saying “why isn’t Han Solo and Chewbacca in your top 3?!!”. Like I said earlier, this was a really tough list to make and I think that Han and Chewie are a fantastic movie duo that are one of the more iconic like C-3P0 and R2-D2 are. It’s basically a guy and his 8 foot tall dog going on adventures and getting in wars...in stars. Harrison Ford does a great job of playing off of a big 8 foot tall furry monster. And they just have some really sweet and heartfelt moments in all of the movies. And when Han Solo dies in The Force Awakens (SPOILER ALERT) you feel Chewie’s emotion as he watches his best friend die in front of his eyes. When you put the pieces together you get an iconic and great movie duo.

6. Thor and Loki (MCU): My dad is probably also going to comment “why is Thor and Loki above Han and Chewie?!?!”. But I think what puts Thor and Loki above Han and Chewie is I think there is more story with them. In the first Thor movie you have Thor and Loki have this weird relationship who are rivals. And in The Avengers they are full of villains, and with the two Thor sequels their relationship comes back around and they are working together. So I think they have a great story arc that runs throughout the MCU. Also, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddelston have amazing chemistry and they play off of one another really well and bring some really funny moments in the MCU movies. I am curious to see if we will get more of Thor and Loki in Loki’s upcoming tv show and if it will develop their relationship even farther.

5. Tyler Durden and The Narrator (Fight Club): Fight Club is one of the movies that I watched for the first time in 2020, and I loved the movie. And I think one of the major reasons for that is the dynamic that Tyler and The Narrator have all through-out the movie. Edward Norton’s character is this odd guy that doesn’t know what to do with life. And he meets Tyler Durden who has all of the traits that Norton wants. So they have this interesting and odd relationship that keeps on getting weird and weirder. I find that Brad Pitt and Edward Norton have great chemistry and fit their characters really well. And once the final twist happens, the movie and their relationship flips on its head. So this is a fantastic movie duo that works and is developed in one movie.

4. Mike Wazowski and Sully (Monsters Inc. and University): The first of two Pixar duos on the list and there is so much about this duo that I really like. Billy Crystal and John Goodman are so great as these characters and have great chemistry. They work well by themselves but they are even better together. I find it interesting when they meet in Monsters University as they are opposites but in the movie they grow and become good friends. Which then leads into Monsters Inc., and there we see them as friends trying to uncover a mystery on the odd things like finding a little girl in the workplace. Their dynamic adds a bunch of nice moments of humor to scenes in each of the movies. When you put the chemistry, actors, story, and humor together you easily get one of the best movie duos of all time.

3. Marty McFly and Doc Brown (The Back to the Future Trilogy): The Back to the Future trilogy is maybe the best 80s franchise of all time. It’s a trilogy that was beloved when it came out, and in 2021 it is still beloved. And the relationship between Marty and Doc Brown is at the heart and soul of this trilogy. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd it’s hard to imagine, anybody else having this amount of chemistry as these two actors have with one another. The play off of one another so well, and it is so much fun to see them on screen together. Somebody released a video where they put Robert Downey Jr. 's and Tom Holland’s faces on Marty and Doc, I watched it and I went they would be great as these characters. But would never be able to top Fox and Lloyd. They are iconic, legendary, and overall a fantastic movie duo that will be beloved for years and years to come.

2. Captain America and Bucky Barnes (The MCU): I had to include another MCU duo on the list. And this duo has been through quite a bit. In The First Avenger, they are friends then a few incidents happen, The Winter Soldier Bucky comes back as a villain. In Civil War Steve is trying to save Bucky, then Infinity War and Endgame close out their friendship. And they go through this journey that is so great and heartfelt. In The Winter Soldier, Bucky is taken over by evil, but Steve being the good boy that he is tries to bring the best out of him. I think there is something powerful about that, and their whole relationship is powerful and great. They have had their ups and downs but Steve is always with Bucky till the end of the line. And, I’m really bummed that we won’t get any more of Steve and Bucky in the MCU, because Steve’s story came to an end. But this is a fantastic movie duo.

1. Woody and Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story Franchise): For me, these two characters are the best movie duo of all time. They have all of the best aspects of a great movie duo, great chemistry and a great story line. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen have absolutely perfect chemistry as Woody and Buzz. They have some much fun between them, and their chemistry helps make them my favorite movie duo. But I think they have the best arc of all of the duos in movie history. In Toy Story, Woody doesn’t like Buzz and is jealous of him, in Toy Story 2, Buzz and Woody switch roles, and Buzz talks down to Woody. Toy Story 3 starts to close out their dynamic and relationship. And, one of the most emotional moments in movie history is when Buzz says goodbye to Woody at the end of Toy Story 4. This is a fantastic movie duo, so it’s hard for me to imagine a better movie duo.

There you have it, my 10 favorite movie duos of all time. What is your favorite movie duo of all time? Also, I’ve done a whole lot of other Top 10 lists, so you can check those out as well.
