Godzilla vs Kong Movie Review

Godzilla vs Kong Movie Review

After a whole bunch of delays, Godzilla vs Kong has dropped on HBO Max and in theaters. I’ve been excited to see these two monsters battle it out. So how is this movie, let’s find out!

The Good:

When you go into a movie like this, the most important thing this movie has to do is deliver fun and exciting action...this movie does just that. I think this is the best monster action of the franchise, it’s shot with wide angles and you can see everything that is happening. In both of the Godzilla movies, it is shot where you can’t see what is happening and shot from the perspective of the human characters. But here, you get multiple monster action scenes and everyone is epic and awesome. So without question, the best monster action of the franchise.

This is also a movie that has some amazing CGI. If this movie doesn’t win or at least get nominated for best visual effects at the Oscars...I’m going to have some words with some people. But all of the action scenes look incredible, there was not one shot in this movie that I didn’t buy. It’s truly amazing what 21st century technology can do nowadays. Even when it’s Kong sitting in a grassy field it’s just as good as when Godzilla and Kong are fighting.

I think they did a great job of giving Kong an arc through-out this movie. They make us feel human and relatable. They easily could have just written him to be a big gorilla, but they give him layers. And his relationship with the little girl has this heartfelt and sweetness vibe about it. And I thought what they did with Kong in this movie was a smart thing to do, and was a great aspect for the movie.

Next, this movie has a sense of humor in it. Every couple of minutes there is a nice solid joke to keep you entertained when there isn’t big monster action. Brian Tyree Henry delivers a good number of the jokes, and I thought he was really funny in this movie (excited to see him in Eternals later this year). But a number of the actors get a funny bit at some point in the movie.

Tied to that, this is a movie that moves a nice pace. There is an action scene or something interesting happening on screen to keep you entertained from beginning to the end. I wasn’t bored while I was watching this movie.

Finally, I like that this movie explores the mythology of the titans. It explores and explains that maybe Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors have a history. And it’s all interesting and makes the history of these characters and the world feel bigger.

The Bad:

There are a number of the laps in the logic in this movie. It’s shown in the trailers of Godzilla and Kong fighting on boats, you are thinking to yourself “shouldn’t the boat be sinking?” And a few other situations like that. I understand that this is a dumb monster movie, but there should at least by some rules regarding the logic of everything.

Also, like the other movies, the characters here aren’t the best. They are really given one job and a characteristic and that is it. The best example of that is with the Demian Blair and Eliza Gonzalez characters, they had potential to be interesting characters but the movie really wasted them.

Final Thoughts:

A few missteps aside, Godzilla vs Kong is a dumb fun monster action movie. If you like that sort of thing then you will enjoy this movie. It delivers on the action you want, and even has some nice heart and humor as well.

The Score: 8.7/10 (B+)
