WandaVision Episode 1 and 2 Review
It has been 564 days since we got something new from the MCU, the last thing we saw in the MCU was Spider-Man: Far From Home. MCU has returned with WandaVision, this show is the kick off to Phase 4 of the MCU. My dad and I have watched episodes 1 and 2, and here I wanted to give my thoughts on the episode.
The Good:
The best thing about these episodes was the fact that they went big and weird with this show. We see the trailers Black Widow and it seems very similar to Winter Soldier, what we know of Eternals seems like Guardians of the Galaxy. There is no point of reference for this show, and that is part of it’s charm. Marvel took a big risk with this type of show to kick off Phase 4 (now, Black Widow was supposed to start Phase 4...but 2020 happened and now WandaVision is). Each episode is set in a different time period, episode 1 is in the 50s, and episode 2 is in the 60s. And each episode is played like a sit-com and with the decade they are in matches the type of site-form they do. So the fact that this is a big and weird show is what I enjoyed the best about it.
Second, our two leads are so much in this role. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have great chemistry, and it feels like they know they are getting the hang of their characters. Even with that, Vision and Wanda have always been side characters in the movies, so it is nice that they get to take the lead with this show. And it’s fun to see Olsen and Bettany doing something different inside of the MCU.
It also has a nice sense of humor, I think this is up there with one of the funniest things that the MCU has done. Because the humor is sit-com style humor, and sit-com style humor is very funny it transitions into this show very nicely.
Finally, the first two episodes build a great sense of mystery and make you want to come back to watch the next episode. With where episode 2 ends things, I’m very excited to see where episode 3 goes with the cliffhanger. So this is very easy to binge tv show.
The Bad:
I don’t know how to start with the bad...don’t mean in a bad way. But, each episode feels like stand alone episodes and that don’t feel like they go together. And without knowing where the season goes, this issue could go away once we see the full story of this season. And that’s really the only thing that I thought hurt this show so far was the fact that it didn’t have a story tying them together, like I said this issue could go away as the season goes on. But right now, I didn’t care for that as much.
And it’s that this show feels so detached from the rest of the MCU that it feels too distant. Before WandaVision, the last time we saw Wanda she was fighting Thanos in Endgame. This show opens up and a 50s style sit-com. So this feels a bit too detached and weird for my liking.
Final Thoughts: This is a tough one for me to grade, because it’s so weird and bonkers that I don’t know where to begin with. So I’m not going to grade these episodes, but I would go positive on it. And I am looking forward to checking out episode 3-9.
What did you think of WandaVision? Also, when the season is done I do plan on ranking all 9 WandaVision episodes!
