Birds of Prey Review

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn Review

We have made it to the final movie in my DCEU review series. This weekend I will be watching Wonder Woman 1984. Today we are talking about the first DCEU movie to come out in 2020, Birds of Prey and the very long title that has something to do with Harley Quinn.

The Good:

This is a very fun and quick moving movie, it’s never boring mainly because of the action and the cast. It’s just never dull there is always something happening in the movie to keep you entertained and focus. This is the most entertaining DCEU movie. So the action in this film is handled very well, this is some of the best action in any DC movie. It is shot and choregraphed in a unique way that makes the action exciting. There is plenty of great action and different action in the movie. The stand out being the prison break sequence around the 40 minute mark and the third act has some very cool action in it as well.

Another big positive for the movie is the car. Of course Margot Robbie is just great and fun in the movie this is Harley Quinn in her prime, Robbie gets to go full Harley Quinn and she is so much fun in the movie. . And Ewan McGregor is great as the villain, Roman Sionis aka Black Mask. And the reason for that is because McGregor can be so terrifying and then switch to be charismatic in seconds, that is some great acting that needed to be done by an actor like Ewan McGregor.

The rest of the cast is also quite good. But Ella Jay Basco and her dynamic with Margot Robbie was also very fun. But the actress who plays Black Canary, Jurnee Smollett-Bell was a nice addition in the film they give her character an interesting role in the story that adds layers to the movie. And so nobody gave a bad performance in the movie, this is one of the best cast superhero movies ever made.

This is also a film with a very unique style to it, wither it’s the characters, humor, or action everything has a style to it that we haven’t really seen in a comic book movie before. Harley Quinn narrators the story all through out the movie, and doing so adds something to the movie. We see the story take place from her perspective. There is meta humor and breaking the fourth wall that adds to the entertainment that I keep mentioned and brings a fresh take on the superhero genre.

Lastly, this a movie where it goes for it with the R rating. They don’t pull their punches they go full swing ahead there are a few scenes where it was uncomfortable to watch because they go for it with the R rating.

The Bad:

With a good portion of the action scenes in the movie there are laps in the logic with the action it was a cool shot but you watch it and you are like that’s not suppose to happen.

Also some of the other characters are undeveloped and aren’t fleshed out as much as other characters in the movie.

Final Thoughts:

Birds of Prey is just very entertaining movie. The cast, action, story, and style make for one of the most entertaining superhero and DC movies of all time. My review for Wonder Woman 1984 will be dropping this weekend, and my review for Soul is coming this weekend as well.

The Score: 9.2/10 (A-)
