Every New Movie I Watched in Quarantine for the First Time Ranked
We have been in lock down for 6 months now...which is crazy. But during this quarantine one of the fun things is that I have watched a whole lot of movies with my dad and mom, so I wanted to do something fun and rank every new movie I watched in quarantine for the first time.
Note: When I say new, I mean first time watches. So I am including 2020 movies but also some movies from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
20. Artemis Fowl: On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 9 percent, I wouldn’t go that far, but the movie is very mediocre and boring. It had all of the pieces to start a fun franchise adapted from a book series, but here it just falls flat. Frustrating enough I thought they wasted Colin Farrell in the movie. They used him as a plot device for the movie and that was frustrating because the introduction to Farrell’s character was pretty good, but they wasted him. The best part of the movie was Josh Gad he had so many funny moments. But they also gave him the Christian Bale Batman voice, and that’s weird to do that with the guy who voices Olaf.
19. A Good Day to Die Hard: I watched the entire Die Hard franchise during quarantine and this is easily the weakest of the franchise. It is still fun, I still enjoyed the movie. It’s also a movie that has a whole lot of problems in it. The villains here I think are by far the weakest villains of the franchise; the previous four films all had distinct villains that you enjoyed, this movie didn’t so it was disappointing. But beyond that the Jai Courtney character was so frustrating because while Courtney didn’t do a bad job, they treated him as being very unlikeable.
18. Twilight: So...I watched Twilight for the first time in quarantine, and I went into this movie not knowing what I was going to feel from this movie. The movie was a bit of a guilty pleasure. The movie has terrible acting, terrible dialogue, and way too many scenes of Robert Pattinson staring at Kristen Stewart. BUT. For whatever reason I had fun with it. Like I said guilty pleasure movie, 100 percent. I don’t know what it is but I just enjoyed it. And so overall, fun movie that has a lot of problems with it, and maybe a Twilight ranking will happen in the future.
17. Bloodshot: This is another 2020 movie that I watched during quarantine, and like Twilight, a bit of a guilty pleasure movie. The action, acting, and writing for the movie is dumb, but that’s what I enjoyed. Vin Diesel gives a very Vin Diesel performance, which is ok for me. The story maybe wasn’t as good as it could be, but I also don’t think it was focused on making a movie with a good story.
16. Sonic the Hedgehog: This was a movie that I was able to see at a drive-in movie theater back in April, and I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun to see Jim Carrey be Jim Carrey back on the big screen. James Marsden was also a whole lot of fun that had a nice chemistry with Sonic. But the movie also has a lot of issues. First issue, this is a road trip movie, so it follows all of the road trip cliches. Second, the Sonic world has loopty loops and weird creatures, but a majority of this movie takes place in a truck. And the Sonic character is very unlikeable, and doesn’t make for a character you want to be around.
15. Superman: Red Son: This is a DC Animated Movie that went straight to VOD (Video on Demand). And the Red Son comic book series is very interesting, because it tells the story for what happens if Superman landed in Russia instead of the United States. The concept and execution of it I thought worked. But it did feel at points that it rushed over a lot of important stuff because the run time is 1:24 minutes (with the credits). So it felt like it needed to add 10-15 minutes to flush out some side plots involving Batman and Wonder Woman. Also the movie takes place in Russia they have Russian accents and at points it was hard to understand what they were saying.
14. Greyhound: This is the latest film from Tom Hanks which dropped on Apple+ in July. And I’m a big fan of Tom Hanks. He is one of my Top 3 favorite actors of all time, and this was a good Tom Hanks movie. Not amazing, but a solid film. Since the run time is 1:31 minutes it doesn’t really stop and so you feel on the edge of your seat for a good majority of the movie. That is also part of the problem since the run time is so short, Tom Hanks’s character doesn’t get a lot of development. Once again, like Superman: Red Son, they should have added 10-15 minutes to the runtime to develop the main character of the movie. And the sound here was quite good and made you feel like you were in the middle of the action.
13. The One and Only Ivan: This is the latest Disney+ original film based on a real life story which was then adapted into a book. And the best thing about the movie was the cast, it has Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren, and Danny DeVito and those are actors whom I enjoy. And this is also a movie that can be very funny but also very emotional so this is the 2020 movie that had the most emotions. And I don’t have any big issues with the movie, but the movie didn’t do anything to be one of the best 2020 movies or anything bad that made it the worst 2020 movie. Just right there in the middle.
12. My Cousin Vinny: This 1992 Joe Pesci comedy was very funny to watch. The only movies I have seen Joe Pesci is My Cousin Vinny, Goodfellas, and Home Alone 1 and 2. And those are quite different performances from him. This movie has a whole lot of laughs, and is one of the more fun movies I have watched this year. It doesn’t demand a lot from you, and that's one of the best things about this movie, it’s just fun. I can’t say why this movie isn’t higher up. It didn’t make any big mistakes. So like I said, I can’t say and pinpoint anything it did wrong. It was just a movie that I enjoyed.
11. Live Free or Die Hard: This is the guilty pleasure movie of the Die Hard Franchise and easily the most ridiculous action. Bruce Willis hangs on the side of planes and all that fun stuff. This movie felt like Die Hard mixed with Mission Impossible and Fast and Furious, and all of that sounds like a dumb action movie. That is what this movie is. Willis’s relationship with Justin Long’s character adds a nice dynamic, and the scene with Kevin Smith is a ton of fun and it is cool to see Kevin Smith in this movie. From here on up I really enjoy all of these movies, so the fact that this movie is at number 11 means that I really, really enjoyed all of the movies from here on up.
10. Die Hard 2: Die Harder: The sequel to the 1988 Die Hard, is a good sequel. I’ve seen a lot of people on the internet dislike the movie, and I don’t get it. I think the movie is fun. William Sadler is a fun villain who you want to see John McClane take out. It’s also just fun to see more Die Hard and more of McClane shooting and punching people in the face. The downside of this film is that the plot follows the template for the original Die Hard. If you were to take a scene from this movie there is more than likely a scene like that in the original movie. That maybe isn’t the best choice to go with. But really besides that, I enjoy this movie.
9. Airplane: Where to begin with this movie, this is easily one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. There are so many iconic and great quotes. “Surely, you can’t be serious.” “I am serious and don’t call me, Shirley.” It is a movie that could only work once. I was thinking how would this movie respond with people if it came out in the year 2020...probably very differently. But this is a classic comedy that keeps you laughing from beginning to the end. If you haven’t seen this movie definitely watch this movie, it’s on Netflix and you will be laughing a whole lot.
8. Hamilton: This is the most surprising movie I watched in 2020. I was curious to check it out because I heard so much about it. I watched this movie in July and the movie and the soundtrack have been on loop in my house ever since. I haven’t gotten tired of it...yet. I haven’t seen very many big budgeted plays before and so getting to see it was cool. My favorite song changes every day with “The Room Where It Happens”, “What Did I Miss”, and “You’ll be Back”. I really enjoyed this and I can see why so many people have become obsessed. I hope that one day I can see the show on Broadway.
7. Die Hard With A Vengeance: The third movie in the Die Hard franchise is easily the best Die Hard sequel. The best thing about this movie was the relationship and dynamic between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. I’m a big fan of Jackson so getting to see him in a Die Hard movie was so fun. But I also like that this movie is more of a thriller than it is a straight up action movie. It’s a chase movie where Willis and Jackson are running around New York City trying to stop Jeremy Irons from destroying the city. So this is also the most fun Die Hard movie, this is the one that I could see myself rewatching the most.
6. A Few Good Men: The movies ranked from here on out are in my Top 50 favorite movies of all time. The fact that this is at number 6 is shocking to me, but the movie itself is a great courtroom drama. I heard the “you can’t handle the truth” scene a half billion times so finally getting to see it in the actual movie was so awesome. Tom Cruise is pretty funny, this is still very much a drama movie but Cruise has a lot of funny and charming moments that make it entertaining. Jack Nicholson is so despicable that you love to dislike his character, but Nicholson being a fantastic actor plays the role so well. And the rest of the cast with Kevin Bacon, Keifer Sutherland, and Demi Moore are also quite good. Again I wish this movie could be higher up on the list.
5. The Departed: This 2006 Boston Crime Thriller is a fantastic movie in so many ways. First of all, the cast here is fantastic. It has one of my favorite casts of all time. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon in the lead makes for a great Martin Scorsese crime movie that has a lot of violence and F-bombs in it. And the A-list cast in the movie with Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Mark Whalberg, Vera Farminga, and Martin Sheen that is great. Beyond the actual plot of the movie involving moles in the mob and police is also a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat for the entire movie wondering what is going to happen next.
4. Goodfellas: This is the other Martin Scorsese movie that I watched, and I thought it was better. This is widely regarded as one of Scorsese’s best movies. Since I have only seen two I can’t rank them, but I have a hard time imagining a Scoreses movie topping this one. Another great mobster movie, with another great cast. Ray Liotta was very good in this movie and I like that you get to see his character grow over time and that he is the point of view character for the story. I saw Pesci in Home Alone and this is quite the change of character who says a whole lot of F-Bombs. The movie also has iconic scenes like “Funny How? Funny like a clown” or the one-take scene through the kitchen is fantastic. Put the pieces together and you get one of the best movies ever made.
3. Die Hard: This is a classic 1980s movie that works on almost every level. The movie is fantastic because of the action, one liners, and cast. This movie put Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman to the A-list for many many years. (RIP Alan Rickman) but Rickman plays Hans Gruber one of the greatest movie villains of all time. Where he is so despicable and a terrible person but Rickman plays him with so much energy about him, that I enjoyed a whole lot. And just iconic lines with “I have a machine gun..HoHoHo” or “Yippee ki yay…”, you know the rest. So this is easily my favorite Die Hard movie and is one of the greatest movies ever movie.
2. Se7en: This movie next to Die Hard is on the opposite side of entertainment. I haven’t been wanting to go back and watch this movie, because...it’s not a very watchable movie. This is a fantastic movie that is also a fantastic thriller. John Doe is the evil murderer that you want Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman to take out. And the final 5 minutes of the movie is maybe one of my favorite final scenes. It’s so intense and whenever I get the chance I say “What’s in the box?” and you find out what is in the box and...yah. Even, Pitt and Freeman have a great dynamic and chemistry that add some nice moments of their friendship in the movie.
1. The Silence of the Lambs: By far the creepiest movie I have ever seen. This movie has my favorite performance of all time with Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He is so creepy that still to this day I’m thinking about his performance. Interestingly enough the Hannibal Lecter character was inspired by an actual event, which is just creepy. Jodie Foster as the FBI agent investigating Hannibal Lecter is also quite good and an Oscar well-deserved. And once again like Se7en, I can’t imagine myself rewatching this movie a whole lot. But wow, this movie made it into my Top 10 favorite movies of all time.
That is my list of all of the new movies I watched in quarantine. What movies did you watch for the first time during this pandemic?
