Aquaman Review
Aquaman was released in December 2018. It’s the 6th film in the DCEU. And we are continuing my DCEU Review Series. So let’s talk about...Aquaman!
The Good:
This movie is one of the more fun movies in the DCEU. There is lots of action and humor in the movie to keep you entertained from the beginning of the movie to the end of the movie. So with that the humor for the most part made me laugh (I’ll talk more about the humor in the bad section). And just the fun characters also help with the entertainment of the movie.
Another positive aspect about the movie is the action. If I was to rank all the DCEU movies by the action in the movie this movie could be number 1 or number 2. There is a lot of action in the movie whether you have Nicole Kidman fighting henchman in a house or you have chases on rooftops with Aquaman and Mera vs Black Manta, whatever it is it’s awesome. And the final battle is big and epic and once again very fun to watch.
And like most of the films in the DCEU the cast here is pretty great. Jason Mamoa is so much fun as the Aquaman character that you like to be around him. Patrick Wilson as King Orm, Aquaman’s half brother is also very good in the movie. He is the villain of the movie. He wants to destroy the land, but his reasons for wanting to do that aren’t wrong. He says that humans pollute the ocean and throw garbage in there and therefore it is harming their culture. So the characters are some of the most interesting in the DCEU.
I think the world building for the movies is once again...very good. Since this is their first dive into Atlantis they do a good job of telling the back story of Atlantis. I thought that they handled it in a way that made sense and you could understand what was going on with the world building.
Lastly, the visual effects for Atlantis were handled very well. It is so colorful and beautiful to look at. What they do with the final battle is big and epic and looks incredible. This might be the best looking movie inside of the DCEU.
The Bad:
This movie has a lot of humor in it. And most of it worked for me where you have Jason Mamoa being very fun. But there is also a good number of humor that doesn’t work where you have Jason Mamoa making jokes about peeing on objects, and when it does that stuff I wasn’t a big fan of it.
The movie also follows the Lion King story template. What I mean by that where you have family fighting for the throne. And because of that parts of the story felt predictable at points where it follows a very very similar story template. I wish they changed it a bit to change things up a bit.
Lastly, the movie is 2 hours and 23 minutes long, they could have trimmed a bit from the beginning and middle of the movie. I think it takes a bit too long for the actual plot to kick in. And in the middle with the adventure side of it, it can drag a bit in the middle of the movie.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Aquaman is one of the more fun movies in the DCEU. It’s not the best made of the movies but it was a fun one nonetheless. The characters, action, world building, and fun make a good DCEU movie.
The Score: 8.1/10 (B)
