Suicide Squad Review

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad was released in August 2016, and it is the third movie inside of the DCEU. We are continuing my DCEU Review series. So let’s talk about Suicide Squad.

The Good:

This film has a fun set of actors to portray the characters in the movie. Will Smith as Floyd Lawton is just great because he can be fun and the guy that has a great aim. But you could also buy him as the family man who wants to see his daughter. Margot Robbie is another stand-out where she is just crazy and wild as Harley Quinn and gets a ton of great moments in the spotlight whether it’s her action scene in the elevator or just little jokes that she gives. But the rest of the cast with Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Herendez, and Joel Kinnaman do a nice job of filling out the cast of the movie.

This ties back to what I just mentioned but the characters here are a ton of fun. The main reason for that is that they are played by fun actors and the fun actors are having fun in their roles in this movie. And they have a nice chemistry among them, especially Smith and Robbie (they worked on a movie before this one called Focus). Their dynamic is one of the stand-out because they are friends, but you can also see that they care about each other.

And the movie can also have a nice sense of humor; most of it coming from the dynamic between the group. Or individual characters saying funny jokes. Jai Courntey as Captain Boomerang gives a lot of nice moments where he has this pinky unicorn that he carries around with him. Or him just mocking El Diablo. So the Suicide Squad member themselves add a whole lot of humor to the movie, that adds some nice entertainment to the film.

Once again like the previous two DCEU Movies, I really dug the soundtrack. Through-out most of the movie there are great songs playing like Bohemian Rhapsody and Spirit In The Sky that add to the film’s style. And makes the movie very fun to watch, and makes you want to sing along to them as you are watching the movie.

Lastly, most people forget this but this movie actually won an Oscar for best make-up and hairstyling and that part of the movie is pretty good. The make-up for Harley Quinn, Joker, and Killer Croc all looks pretty good. You can tell that they spent a lot of time on it and just didn’t rush it to make it look cool.

The Bad:

Enchantress and her brother are some of the weakest comic book villains in any comic book movie of all time. You don’t understand what their big master plan is, they just feel there has to be a villain in the movie. It felt like the writers were so focused on developing the Suicide Squad and didn’t work on devleoping the villains, so that is not a good sign. I think the idea of Enchantress as this villain that could be controlled by the good guys, the execution of that isn’t very good.

It can also rehash plot points in the movie. There are three different helicopter crashes in the movie, and two of the three happen within 5 minutes of each other. And there are two action scene within 5 minutes of one another where the Suicide Squad surronds Rick Flag to protect him. I do know that there is a lot of behind the scenes drama, but one of the producers should have notice this and said wait we should cut some of those out...they don’t need to be there. But they didn’t so it is a problem with the movie.

Another problem with the movie is that the cast of the movie is way too big. The Suicide Squad has like 7 people on the team, and you also have Joker, Amanda Waller, and the two bad guys, that is a lot of main characters. So maybe they should have cut back on some characters to focus more on developing the core characters.

Lastly, the movie should have made Joker the main villain. Take out Enchantress as the villain and Joker needs to be the main villain for the movie. But beyond that, this version of the Joker looks different from previous versions of the Joker, but we don’t really know anything about him. Now I’m not saying a backstory but something different where we get to see him to do more villainous things.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, Suicide Squad is never boring there is always a joke or action scene going to the keep you invested. But it does have some story problems that hold it back from being as good as it could be. My Wonder Woman review will be dropping next week, so look out for that.

The Score: 6.2/10 (C+)

It would be interesrting if Joker was the main bad guy and Harley was on the Squad. Would she try to take him down?
